FAITH
BY E A RL VAU G H A N J R .
For a community with less than a
quarter of a million residents, the
city of Fayetteville offers many
diverse options for people of faith.
T
here's little doubt in the mind of Bruce
Daws, manager of the city's historic
properties, from where much of that
variety originates.
"With Fort Bragg's arrival, you have a whole lot
of different faiths that were brought into the
community,'' he said.
But Fort Bragg played no role in the initial faith
roots that took shape in the community as it began
to grow in the late 18th century.
People of Scottish descent established some of the
worship groups in Cumberland County. In the early
days of the region, Daws said, people of faith relied
mostly on traveling ministers, who held worship
services in private homes, before actual churches
were established.
