"I discussed the leadership experience I gained on our National Fraternity Board when I was selected as an undergraduate representative on our Grand Council." While on the national board, Stu spent most of his time on the finance committee. That position and his leadership roles at Mu Chapter taught him more than he learned in any economics class and made him a stronger applicant for his first job than he realized. After his second interview, he was one of the final three candidates being considered and had to complete a two-page written financial memo on a publicly traded company. "I spent day and night on that assignment. I remember calling the hiring manager because I had a question, and I thought I was not going to get the job because the hiring manager forgot who I was when I called and asked, 'Stu who?'," he shared. "A few days after turning in my financial memo assignment, I got a call from the hiring manager—the bank wanted to offer me the job. Not because of my two-page paper, but because of a reference." Kevin Garvey's reference and words of praise elevated Stu above the other candidates, and thus he began his desired career in commercial banking. More than 20 years later, Stu still works in the commercial banking field and attributes his success to his membership in Alpha Sigma Phi. "I contributed to the Securing the Future of Mu Chapter campaign because of the leadership opportunities I gained as an Alpha Sigma Phi member and in appreciation for the reference and recommendation I received from Brother Garvey," he stated. With more than 20 years of commercial banking experience under his belt, Stu serves as senior vice president and director of Commercial Banking within Washington Trust Bank and manages one of the larger commercial banking portfolios in the Puget Sound area. He received his MBA from a nighttime program at Seattle University in 2005 and completed a three-year certificate from Pacific Coast Banking School through UW's Foster School of Business in 2016. Stu and his wife, Erin, have two children, Austin and Ella, and they live in Snoqualmie Ridge. You can connect with Stu at slinscott@watrust.com.
