The Quartzsite Improvement Association (QIA) and local organizations are planning the World's Largest Gathering of Grand Parents and Great Grands! In true community spirit, cooperation is occurring between the Town of Quartzsite administration and many local organizations to produce an exceptional event for the community and visitors alike. QIA volunteers are in process contacting Guinness Book of World Records to set the world record. The QIA and Proud Neighbors of Quartzsite (PNQ) are spearheading plans for special events for the fourday event. John Hendrix, of QIA, brought forth the idea of helping to extend the season. Hendrix said, "I was just thinking, what we have most in Quartzsite are grandparents, so why not have a celebration for them?" He began sharing his idea with others and the event has grown as more people and organiza- tions learn of the plans. The goal is for every club, organization and charity to participate in variety of events of March 6th – 9th, while putting Quartzsite "back on the map in a positive light," said Hendrix. RV Park owners/managers are offering special discounts for The Grand Gathering. Some of the town-wide events being planned are a Senior Fair at the Park, a Grand Parade, Antique Car Show, a "JAM"boree, Live Music, fun-filled dances, special bingo events, Town-wide Yard Sales, Pancake Breakfasts, a variety of Special Tours, such as Celia's Rainbow Gardens, etc. To add some fun flavor to the event, businesses are being asked to decorate using the theme of the Mardi Gras colors, green, purple and gold. Commemorative Bricks will also be offered to honor participation in the World's Largest Gathering of Grandparents and Great Grands. Promotion of the event is already in progress. Bob Lucas, of QIA, has contacted a DJ at Sirius Radio who has agreed to help promote the event. Websites, brochures, flyers, social media sites are in the beginning stages. Consumers don't make a list before they go. It always helps to have a clear plan of what you're going to buy Like us on Facebook at www.facebook.com/ DesertMessengerNews Follow on Twitter @DesertMessenger @QuartzsiteRain June 12, 2013 before you hit the store. To help, there are a number of apps that can get you organized. One, ZipList, is an online recipe box and shopping list system that syncs across desktop, tablet and mobile devices, so you can stick to your list and not forget important ingredients. 2. Shoppers buy food when they're hungry. Shopping hungry often leads to impulse buys and purchasing more than you need. 3. They don't look down. Brands pay a premium to be displayed at eye level, so looking down can be a way to find the same-quality items at lower prices. 4. People shy away from the generic brands. You've had your go-to cereal for years but your grocery store may be offering the same ingredients in a generic cereal for a fraction of the cost. 5. They go during peak hours. Shopping for the week on Sunday afternoon? Looks like everyone had the same idea. Try to switch up your schedule and stock up during less popular times, such as late evening on a weeknight or early Saturday morning. 6. Food purchasers ignore the center aisles. Center aisles at grocery stores usually contain such packaged goods as canned food and beans. These can offer depth and heartiness to your meals without breaking the bank. 7. Consumers don't check for deals. The online list system can help here, too. ZipList has a Grocery Deals feature that helps you find what's on sale at stores near you. The feature pulls directly from grocery circulars and other sources, so even perishable goods can be found on the site on a week-to-week basis.
