Our Grand Lodge Annual Communication was linked to meetings of the state legislature from our earliest history. When our Grand Lodge was formed in 1787, it was in Tarboro during the legislative session. Our members in the North Carolina Senate include Dan Blue, Andrew C. Brock, Harry Brown, Martin L. Nesbitt Jr., and Gene McLaurin. Masons in the House of Representatives include John R. Bell IV, Larry M. Bell, C. Robert Brawley, Darren G. Jackson, Linda P. Johnson (who is an Eastern Star and married to Mason Ronnie Johnson), Garland E. Pierce, Jason Saine, and Mitchell Setzer. Other guests at this year's reception were retired Chief Justice I. Beverly Lake Jr., State Supreme Court Spokesman Dick Ellis, and a number of legislative assistants. Ric Car ter photos RALEIGH — A number of members of North Carolina's legislature are Masons. Our Grand Lodge and the Prince Hall Grand Lodge hold a reception for them annually. For this year's session, the reception was held April 3. For the first time, the legislators were hosted at the Grand Lodge offices. The newly restored grand hall was a perfect setting for the reception. The guests got refreshments and a tour of the building. Some other governmental leaders who are Masons were also invited. The reason for the get-together is twofold and simple. First, we thank them for their service to the citizens of North Carolina. Second, we give them the opportunity to recognize their fellow lawmakers who are Masons. While they talked a little politics (after all that is what they are doing in town), most of the conversation was much more social. They smiled Green Lodge raises five RALEIGH — James B. Green 735 raised five new members April 13. It was their first Saturday degree in years. Most of the new Masons were in their 20s and all were under 40 years old. Multiple volumes of sacred law were open on the altar to suit the religions of the candidates.
