April 22 Earth Day You've probably heard about Earth Day, and may even have participated in Earth Day activities at school or in your community. Each year on this day, more than a billion people around the world celebrate Earth Day. This day was first celebrated in 1970 in order to help people around the world to become more aware of and tackle environmental problems to help make sure that our earth remains livable for us humans. We need to protect the planet from things like pollution and deforestation (which destroys the natural habitats of animals.) By doing things like picking up litter and planting trees, you can help make our planet a better place to live! april 15 National Banana Day The day is all about that low fat, low-calorie snack that offers lots of fiber, potassium, and vitamins, with B6 and C too. It also provides a healthy gram of protein. Add a banana to your morning cereal or grab one to go. It's a perfectly portable snack. And bananas are funny too! Slipping on a banana peel is a popular cartoon joke. Pretend a banana is a phone! Write a note on a banana! Then take it along for lunch! April 9 National Unicorn Day Who doesn't love a unicorn? These mythical horse-like creatures with a single, pointed horn growing from the center of their foreheads have been popular since the times of Ancient Greece. Back then, people believed that unicorns lived in India and thought of them as fierce and powerful animals. Now, they're more often considered symbols of enchantment and magic. They often appear in movies and cartoons and fantasy novels as magical creatures. april 13 Thomas Jefferson's Birthday This day honors the third President of The United States, Thomas Jefferson, who was born April 13, 1743. Jefferson was a big fan of democracy and the main author of the Declaration of Independence. He liked writing more than speaking, and really loved to read. In fact, his library contained 6,500 books! Jefferson was a lawyer, but he also studied agriculture, paleontology, and astronomy. He even kept detailed records of the weather in his home state of Virginia. Jefferson served as minister to France, Secretary of State in President Washington's Cabinet and ran for President for the first time in 1796. He lost, and became Vice President to his opponent John Adams. Four years later, Jefferson was elected President and served two terms. Celebrate this day by learning more about Thomas Jefferson by reading one of the many books he wrote or books written about him. april 30 Arbor Day Another "green" holiday this month is Arbor Day, which is celebrated on the last Friday in April, this year on April 30. Arbor Day literally translates to "tree" day from the Latin origin of the word arbor. It is a holiday that celebrates the planting, upkeep and preservation of trees. The first Arbor Day was on April 10, 1872, and an estimated one million trees were planted on that day. www.of f icialkidsmag.com • April 2021 • 7
