Bottom- dwelling Bug Combos (combinations of Benthic Aquatic Macroinvertebrates) change with the changes in water quality (clean to dirty to very polluted). These species of aquatic animals are sorted by their tolerance levels or ability to stay alive in different types of water quality. Use the creek "Bugs" & "critters" table to do surveys of bug combos in 5 streams to find water quality values for each one. Directions: Find how many different Benthic "Bugs" live in a stream. 1. Place an "X" in the # box next to each DIFFERENT macroinvertebrate you find. For example, mark only 1 "X" next to "Aquatic Worms," even if you find more. 2. Add Xs for the DIFFERENT SENSITIVE SPECIES FOUND and write SUM next to the "S". Total number of Xs. Do the same for Total # of DIFFERENT TOLERANT SPECIES FOUND. 3) In each # column, multiply Total Number of Xs by the Sensitivity "Factor" to get Index Value. 4) Add 3 Index Values to get the STREAM WATER QUALITY "WQ" TOTAL INDEX VALUE. stream 1. stinky creek 2.
