SPRING 2017 EDITION PAGE 3 D uring his Alpha Eta undergraduate experience and while serving as the chapter's property manager on the Housing Corporation, Brett Shelton EY1018 has learned more than a thing or two about the importance of stability. After a disappointing experience at another Oklahoma State fraternity his freshman year, Brett transferred to Tulsa and found some stability at the Epsilon Upsilon Chapter of Lambda Chi Alpha. However, the energy collapse of 1984 led Brett to transfer back to OSU and again had him searching for some stability in his college experience. Brett found exactly that and a forever home when he joined Alpha Eta. "The brothers were very welcoming, and it didn't take long for me to feel more at home in the Alpha Eta Chapter than I did in the Epsilon Upsilon Chapter. I established many friendships," Brett said. "The fraternal bond seems to transcend time and provides an anchor to pivot from at any time in life." While Brett shared a house with Brett James AH1256 after transferring back to OSU, he spent a lot of time at the old Chapter House when visiting his brother, Bartt Shelton AH1291, and made many great memories while befriending his Alpha Eta brothers. Brett came to appreciate the old Chapter House even more as an alumnus because of how it truly served as a place where all Lambda Chi Alphas could always call home at OSU. He spent countless hours maintaining the old Chapter House over the years and assisting with the construction process and now upkeep of the new Chapter House. "It's been a ton of work before, during, and after the construction process! Cost effectively maintaining the old house was hard work," Brett said. "Assisting in the evaluation and decision-making process throughout the design and construction phases was more enjoyable. Developing policies and procedures for maintaining a new house with more complex systems and more technology is proving to be a completely new type of challenge." Along with pouring his time and effort into both houses, Brett contributed to Alpha Eta's capital campaign to provide stability to our beautiful new home for many years to come. Brett is proud of how the undergraduate brothers have done their part to build an even brighter future for Alpha Eta by leading with loyalty and purpose. He's calling upon all Alpha Eta alumni to do their part as well by joining him in giving to the capital campaign. "Whether you view it as paying it backward or paying it forward, it takes money to ensure that our children and grandchildren have these same/similar experiences and opportunities," Brett said. "A few have given a lot to make this new house happen. We now need many to give a little so we can reduce the debt on the new house." Brett has also enjoyed stability throughout his career in technical sales thanks to everything he's learned from Lambda Chi Alpha and his education. He's been self-employed for the past 15 years and has been very active in various philanthropic endeavors. Brett is thankful for everything Alpha Eta has given him and hopes other brothers feel the same way and will give back to the brotherhood. "I've realized the value of maintaining and sustaining the active chapter and the 'home.' I have had the opportunity to work with some very fine young men in the house that have stepped up and done a remarkable job," Brett said. "The house manager position has never been more important. Once we get through this initial commissioning phase, I'm looking forward to many years with little to do. I'm hoping I'll be like the Maytag repairman waiting for the phone to ring!"
