March 9th, 2021 Council meeting recap Mayor Norm Simpson read a Proclamation announcing March 6, 2021 as Heroes Appreciation Day. Council did not adopt the rezone application for 140 N. Moon Moun- tain Ave. The consequence is that the non-conforming use of the property remains as Suburban Ranch (SR) zoning. Presently there are both multi-family residential and com- mercial uses on the property. Council voted to authorize the Town Manager to sell, trade or otherwise dis- pose of surplus supplies. There was a con- sensus to allow the Quartzsite Elementary School (QES) District fi rst opportunity to select surplus items that can be used at QES. Once that has been done, then local non-profi ts will have an opportunity to bid on items prior to opening the remain- ing items for sale to the public. Council adjourned into Executive Session to consider the possible em- ployment and salary of a candidate for Police Chief. Upon entering back into regular session, Council voted to authorize the Town Manager to enter into negotiations with Scott Gamble. The Town Manager ex- plained the interview process that occurred with two separate panels of individuals conducting the inter- views. One panel consisted of law enforcement professionals while the other consisted of local citizens. The consensus of both panels was to rec- ommend Mr. Gamble for appoint- ment to the Police Chief position. Under Council reports it was an- nounced there was an article in Kachina News recognizing the ex- cellent work done on the Quartzsite Wastewater Treatment Plant renova- tion. The article can be viewed at the following link: http:www.kelmanon- line.com/httpdocs/files/AZwater/ kachinanews1-2021/index.html Here at Salome High School, the yearbook department decided to spice up yearbook sales by giving away a Valentine's gift. The yearbook staff chose the winner at random from those who purchased this year's book. The winner was sophomore Juan "Yon" Ruelas. The prize includ- ed a teddy bear, a rose bouquet, and a candy bouquet. There were also two runner-up winners, Stephen Avila and Zahaira Castillo. Unfortunately, when Stephen received his prize and was getting ready to take a picture, his balloon got unattached from the string and fl ew away. He was left with just the string. In the end, ev- eryone had a good time watching the balloon get smaller and smaller as it soared way up into the sky. The boys' basketball team has a re- cord of 7-4. In order to keep playing past the regular season, they must win against MALC on the 26th of February and/or Basis on the 27th. This season has been pretty inter- esting. Covid had a big impact on how the players played and felt but Sophomore Juan Ruelas summed it up best when he said "We all stick together no matter what." The girl's basketball season has gone interestingly this year. Despite an even streak of 5 wins and 5 losses, they fi nd themselves in a different situation from the boys in regards to making it past the regular sea- son. They can clinch a spot in the playoffs with a win on the 26th but will most likely be making it to the playoffs no matter what. Either way, Coach McCarty feels confi dent that they will fi nish off the season strong. Sophomore Arianna says, "It's been rough because we didn't even know if we would have a season, but when we did, it was a good time." Despite their hardship, people are still stay- ing strong, The girl's basketball coach Jenny Salazar had this to say, "I'm so happy to be part of an amaz- ing team. I have seen their hard work, dedication, and passion that inspired me in a lot of things. They are the best and my only option is to be the best too." Once again, this year, the SHS building trades program is selling a hand-built shed. Mr. Drotzman is selling the shed for $3000. It is 10ft x 12ft, has one small window, and a fully fi nished fl oor. Each year the underclassmen in building trades hone their skills by building a shed. Last year's shed got put on hold when the school closed, but they've fi nished it and it's ready to go! Drive by the high school and have a look if you are interested. The Quartzsite Food Bank has still been busy as ever. For more info or to donate go to QuartzsiteFoodBank.com and click on Donate.
