Thursday, March 4-March 10, 2021 www.shelbyinfo.com 704/484-1047 - shelby shopper & info - Page 11 I put what I thought was a good shot on a big buck a few weeks ago. I was shooting my muzzleloader and had measured the yardage where the deer would be appearing. Sure enough, they showed up along with this nice buck in the middle of a large, harvested, soybean fi eld. After the shot, the deer jumped straight up illustrating to me I had pulled off an almost perfect shot… I thought. My friend and I high fi ved each other while still trying to stay in the moment. That's how sure I was. And then, for what we later calcu- lated to be about fi ve seconds, we both looked away. When we looked back up, the buck was gone. At fi rst, we thought he must have fallen just on the other side of a small patch of beans that had been left behind. We were still confi dent and waited patiently for a few minutes to pass. I eased out and circled around the patch, glassing with my binoculars. I saw nothing. A few minutes later, my friend came out and we walked to the exact place only to fi nd nothing. It was as if the buck and all the other deer had disappeared. We knew we had to hurry if we were to locate any blood or other mark- ings. There was a snow coming and it would quickly cover up any signs that were there. The problem was, we had no idea which direction they went. After about an hour or so of looking, the snow began falling, covering any hopes for a recovery. We had not given up, but we had run out of op- portunities. We wanted more chances, but they were taken away. Our confi dence that we could keep looking and would eventually fi nd this deer, was left with no place to prove our faith. This one hurt. There are a lot of analogies I think about when I remem- ber this event. The two that are in the front have to do with time. One has to do with growing older and running out of time. This one reminds us of the all the promises we made towards health and wealth. This one doesn't take us by sur- prise. We see the snowy forecast, but we keep procrasti- nating until there is an imposed and unalterable deadline. The other parallel reminds me of those whose time runs out without warning. I think of premature deaths and predicted deadlines. I think of those who put off the most important decisions until the decision is not theirs to make. I hope you will not look down too long before making those life- changing, and even eternity-making decisions. You may think you're only looking down for a few seconds, but those seconds may be the difference between success and won- dering where it all went. Registration is $20 and ends March 10 at 11:59 pm. This year's race mark the 11th year because all races were cancelled in 2020 due to Coronavirus. The 5K race begins at the Trail Head at 807 Bat- tleground Avenue, Kings Mountain, Lat: 35-13-49 / Long: 81-21-02. As of Saturday, 50 runners had registered. T-shirts are only guaranteed for those who register for the 5K by March 5. Runners will have a staggered start, allowing space between them as a safety precaution. Due to new technology purchased by Race Direc- tor Starr Dowell, chips will enable runners to start and end the race without tim- ers. "When a runner goes through the gate on Quarry Road, they will have a chip on that will be scanned so we will know the exact time someone starts," Brutko said. "It will scan them again when they finish. Runners can leave with their chip because they are disposable. So, we will not collect them after the race. Runners are strongly discouraged from gather- ing afterward. We ask that they just finish and leave." There is no reason for runners to gather because the winners are not being announced after the race. That evening, the winners will be announced on the Gateway Trail Facebook Page. The 10Miler began Monday, March 1 and continues through March 12. Runners report on the honor system. Registra- tion is $20. Each runner runs by themselves from Quarry Road to Galilee Church Road, and back. They must report their time to Starr no later than midnight on March 13. T- shirts are not provided for this race. As of Saturday, Brooke Clark with her trophy after the 2019 5k race. Photo by David Evans 18 had registered for this event. All winners of both runs will pick up their trophies at the Arts Center on Tues- day, Wednesday, Thurs- day, or Saturday, March 16 through March 20. There will be a few members from the Gateway Trail Committee there handing out trophies. The trophies are unique pieces of pot- tery made by members of the Gateway Trail Commit- tee.
