The pain a person experiences after a loss is the cost of loving that person. True love is binding, in other words when we love someone with all our being, it is at that moment we become attached physically, emotionally and spiritually. When that attachment is severed we suffer a broken heart. What we do in the days to follow and how we react to a broken heart will determine the quality of our life after our loss. There are some that choose to give up and focus on the past, and subsequently retreat to a life of hopelessness. Please do not misunderstand, the initial moments, days and even months following a death we are left numb and dysfunctional, but to extend the state of dysfunction for a lengthier period of time is a personal choice. When dealing with a broken heart, we must allow the loss of someone we love to change our perspective of life for the good. Even though the life that touched us is gone, there are many valuable lessons to learn. A healthy grief experience will allow us to absorb our loss which will result in positive self-refl ection. We must conclude that our loved one would not want us to sit by and give up. Keep in mind that life will be different, but it can be good again. Letting the introspection of our brokenness motivate us to love and to live again is one of the keys to mending a broken heart.
