A 10-minute walk. Seriously. That's an amazing fact and I plan to put it into place today. Just 10 minutes of walking will help our arteries, veins and vessels — in other words keep that blood fl owing. From Better Health Channel come these words: Walking is simple, free and one of the easiest ways to get more active, lose weight and become healthier. Sometimes overlooked as a form of exercise, walking briskly can help you build stamina, burn excess calories and make your heart healthier. You do not have to walk for hours. I thought about these healthy walking tips after attending the grand opening of the Kiwanis Park in Rutherfordton recently. If you haven't been to the Park you are going to be pleasantly surprised. The Park is simply amazing and one that will bring more and more visitors and walkers to downtown Rutherfordton. The Park, among other things, offers a 2.5 mile asphalt walking trail, a children's activity area, a covered bridge and other bridges to accent the beauty and the simplicity of the Park. The funding for the Park has come from several different sources that include the Town of Rutherfordton, Tourism Development Authority (TDA), RHI Legacy Foundation, Rutherfordton's Recreation Trust Fund, the State of North Carolina, public and private donations. (Donations are being accepted). Rutherfordton Town Manager Doug Barrick said recently although the Town Council did not formally adopt the Trails Corridor Master Plan until March 2015, there was a vision for the Purple Martin trail dating back to 2005. Since the adoption of the Master Plan in 2015, the Town has worked with landowners, RHI Legacy, Rutherfordton town staff and many other stakeholders to begin bringing the Purple Martin Greenway to life. Now at offi cially 2.5 miles, the Trail has reached a major milestone by connecting Crestview park to Kiwanis Park with a 10-foot- wide paved trail. That is a game changer building another walking trail in Rutherfordton that is accessible, safe and convenient. Jerry Stensland, Safe Routes to School coordinator said, "It is beyond exciting to see how the vision of a few started more than 10 years ago has blossomed into a popular reality for all today...And now the fi nal piece in the puzzle is here where Crestview Park will be connected to downtown and the transformed Kiwanis Park. Rutherfordton truly is a trail town now thanks to the strong support from the town council, town staff and its citizens." With this new 2.5 mile trail from north Rutherfordton to south and the 13.5 mile Thermal Belt Rail Trail from Forrest Hunt Elementary School to Gilkey Lumber, we have plenty of walking room to keep our blood fl owing. Trails are literally at the tips of our toes for walking, running and cycling and jogging. Add these trails to all the ones in west Rutherford County in Lake Lure, Chimney Rock and the Hickory Nut Gorge and we have more than ample opportunity for good safe walking routes. Some of the trails have exercise areas, picnic tables and other amenities. Everyone doesn't have the opportunities we have here in Rutherford County to get out and enjoy the beauty in our own backyard or have access to such awesome walking trails. We are proud of the partners in all these efforts Get out your walking shoes and hit the trails for a healthy, mind-clearer adventure. See you there.
