The Zeta Phi A Publication of the Zeta Phi Chapter of Beta Theta Pi Fall 2012 Generations of Zeta Phi Brothers Gather at Dedication to Celebrate Completed House $350,000 Matching Gift Challenge Extended On September 7, nearly 500 Beta brothers, friends, and guests gathered at 520 College Avenue to celebrate the completion of our 39,000-square-foot chapter house. This was made possible by the donation of more than $9.5 million by our loyal alumni through the Building on a Tradition of Excellence campaign. The dedication was truly a historical event, honoring Beta Theta Pi as the leader in updated Greek facilities that provide fraternity men with state-of-the-art living and educational opportunities. The event started with the annual Beta golf tournament held at Gustin Golf Course and put together by Bill Toalson '70. While the field was a little smaller than past years at 90 participants, fun was had by all and $10,000 was raised for the scholarship fund. The day then moved to the chapter house and the dedication ceremony. Many couldn't believe that a mere 16 months earlier the old house had been standing there. We thank John States '94 and his company, Little Dixie Construction, for completing the project on time and on budget. Our on-the-ground advisors Bill Toalson and Marc Swartz '69 worked closely with States to get the job done. As Betas and guests arrived for the event planned by Chuck Chalendar '83 and Ed Brown '84, there was a tremendous amount of excitement and praise for what had been accomplished. The comments confirmed that expectations had been exceeded. The ceremony began with House Corporation President John Hofman '82 welcoming the crowd, followed by University President Tim Wolfe '80 reminding everyone of our great university and reminiscing about his days in the chapter. John Hillhouse '69 presented financial information about the project, concluding that despite the magnificent new house and its cost the fraternity was solvent. Richard Miller '70 got everyone's attention telling the audience that his grandfather, father, two uncles, two cousins, and his son were all Zeta Phi Betas, highlighting the importance of tradition. Chapter President Chris Cary '13 concluded the program with comments on the new house from the chapter's perspective. The General Fraternity representatives were present not only to acknowledge the new Zeta Phi chapter house, but also to present the prestigious Shepardson (Continued on page 5)
