Alwa y s FREE! February | "N" S S SEE NOMADLAND PAGE 8 NOMADLAND nominated for four Golden Globes features real life nomads in Quartzsite | SWANKIE IMBd By Shanana Rain Golden-Bear Quartzsite, AZ - Swankie fi rst came to Quartzsite to participate in the Quartzsite Roadrunner Gem & Mineral Club's activities during the winter season of 2009. That was her fi rst year on the road in her van, and the same year she met Bob Wells. Years later she met Jessica Bruder, who was writing a book about nomads. They spent a few weeks camp- ing together in the BLM (Bureau of Land Manage- ment) camping areas outside of Quartzsite. Brud- er's 2017 non-fi ction book, Nomadland: Surviving America in the 21st Century became the inspiration for Chloé Zhao's 2020 award-winning fi lm NO- MADLAND starring Frances McDormand. The fi lm releases Friday, February 19th! Much of the movie was fi lmed in January 2019 in the beautiful So- noran Desert surrounding Quartzsite. Following the economic collapse of a company town in rural Nevada, Fern (Frances McDormand) packs her van and sets off on the road exploring a life outside of conventional society as a modern- day nomad. The third feature fi lm from director Chloé Zhao, NOMADLAND features real nomads Linda May, Swankie and Bob Wells as Fern's men- tors and comrades in her exploration through the vast landscape of the American West. Scenes around town include the Quartzsite Yacht Club, Quartzsite Sports, Vacation & RV Show ("The Big Tent") T Rocks, Reader's Oasis Bookstore, and the Ehrenberg Laundromat. The stunning cinema- tography showcases the expansive sunrises and sunsets we all enjoy in the Quartzsite area.
