Part of the mission of the McDonald County Chamber of Commerce is its commitment to promoting economic growth throughout the county it serves. And what could be more essential to that mission than establishing a Student Chamber to help prepare the area youth for becoming active members of the McDonald County business community? Launched in the Fall of 2018, the Student Chamber objectives are to become a necessary addition to the McDonald County Chamber of Commerce assisting with membership generation, office and clerical assistance and fundraising. e Student Chamber is already garnering notoriety for one of their activities, Deja Brew coffeehouse. Last year, the Chamber brainstormed on projects with group of students and they came up with the idea of the coffee shop. Deja Brew was owned by the McDonald County Chamber of Commerce, and it was decided that the Student Chamber of Commerce take it over. To get the word out and recruit people to run the coffeehouse, students at McDonald County High School were sent an email last summer offering a class where they could gain business experience and eventually earn scholarships. Kaycee Factor, a McDonald County 12th grade student, read about the opportunity and thought it sounded like a really exciting thing to do. She contacted her teacher and, along with some other students, worked out all of the details. Sydnie Sanny, another 12th grader, even got to draw the Deja Brew logo. e beauty of Deja Brew is that students who are involved get hands on experience in the real business world. ey learn about the importance of advertising, both paid and word of mouth. ey ascertain the importance of keeping track of things to assure that the business is running correctly. ey are able to experience most every aspect of opening and running a business. Deja Brew sells regular coffee, as well as fancier drinks like vanilla ice coffee ice caramel macchiatos and café mochas. ey can also make anything upon request, even if they have not made it before. Customers can bring in a drink that they like and the students look it up and learn how to make it. Or they can tell the barista what's in the drink and they will try to recreate it. Last but not least, all of the profits from Deja Brew coffeehouse are put towards student scholarships. e idea that the Student Chamber brewed up—Deja Brew—has proven a successful, on-the-job learning experience as well as an opportunity for scholarships. A very bright future indeed.
