hen Victor Glover was in
elementary school, he
saw space shuttle launches on
television. And that launched his
dream of being an astronaut.
"It was seeing the shuttle launch
on television that first planted
that seed," remembered Glover.
"Although with my background,
I didn't have any idea what that
path to becoming an astronaut
was, but seeing the shuttle launch
on TV, I thought to myself, I want to drive that thing."
ow Victor Glover is a
NASA astronaut. He
is the pilot and second-in-
command on the Crew-1
SpaceX Crew Dragon,
named Resilience, which
launched on November 15,
2020.
Two days later, the
Resilience docked at the
International Space Station
(ISS) and Glover went on
board to live and work for
six months.
Getting a chance to live and work on the International Space Station is a huge
accomplishment for anyone, but for Glover it is something for the history
books. He is the first African American to stay on the space station for six
months.
n the past 20 years, since
people have been living
and working in the ISS, other
African Americans have gone
to the space station and stayed
for a short time. Glover's six
month stay is the longest
so far.
With the help and encourage-
ment of his teachers, Glover
was able to go to college and
study engineering. He went
from college into the military
and became a test pilot. As a
pilot, he applied and was
accepted into the astronaut
training program, and the rest,
as they say, is history!
