How to make
spin art hearts
What you'll need:
• Washable acrylic craft paint
(pourable paint works best, but
you can also water down regular
acrylic paint so it will flow better)
• Wooden hearts
• Salad spinner
• Tape
• Paper (optional)
• Pens (optional)
Get out the salad spinner, do some
spin painting and make some fun
Spin Art Hearts!! They're beautiful.
They're swirly. They're unique…just like the kids that make them!
And the science behind the swirl makes them a perfect STEAM project!
They make great valentines too!
First step, grab a wooden heart, the spinner, and some tape. You can also cut a heart out of
paper. Tape that heart securely into the bottom of the spinner. Next pour some paint onto the
heart. Lots of paint. But don't worry, you can always do this in phases if you don't get enough
in the first round. Paint, spin, add more paint, spin again.
Then spin! Spin your little heart out (tee hee!)…
Then open up the spinner and see your gorgeously, swirled heart of art!!
You can glue the heart onto another piece of paper to make a valentine!
Spin painting or spin art is a process where
an item is decorated with paint by spinning the
object. The paint flies and makes cool patterns.
What makes the paint fly? Centrifugal force.
Centrifugal force is an apparent force that acts
outward on a body moving around a center,
because of the body's inertia. That's a fancy
definition. But it's something we feel every day.
It's that feeling as you turn the corner in a car
or the feeling that you're going to fly off the
merry-go-round at the park.
