THE SOPHON Michigan Alpha Chapter of Phi Kappa Psi Phi Kappa Psi University of Michigan fall 2020 T he ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has impacted Michigan Alpha Chapter, like everyone else, although we have avoided an outbreak in the chapter house. This is likely due to smart decision-making from our undergraduate brothers along with proper precautions and preparations being followed at the house. We have been closely following the COVID-19 situation at the University of Michigan to determine how to make this school year as safe as possible. The House Corporation installed hand sanitizer stations, along with soap and wipe dispensers, in the bathrooms. We also have biweekly professional cleanings, sanitizing public areas in the house. There are 21 students living in this year. The chapter house is large and provides ample space for following social distancing guidelines. Active brothers have been informed that they are in charge of their own space and conduct while in the facility. Our Phi Psi Creed mandates that the students respect each other. Additionally, we sent a COVID-19 action plan to parents and students that we will reference in the event of a positive test or an outbreak. Undergraduates are utilizing video conferencing apps to connect safely, especially for chapter and committee meetings. Overall, our undergraduate brothers have done a fantastic job thus far, and we hope for a successful, safe end to the year. There have been several notable chapter house improvements recently, including a new, waterproof main room floor! This floor can hopefully last us until 2030 and will ensure that the live-ins have a safe main room to hold chapter meetings and education meetings for new members. The boiler in the basement had a few water spillage issues, so we replaced the low water cutoff along with the automatic water feeder. This will prevent losing heat during the winter months. Additionally, we had to install an external lock box, amongst other changes, to meet city fire code regulations. This is in addition to the fire suppression system installed in 2018. We also made important ADA-compliant ramp and bathroom updates to bring the chapter house in line with regulations. A wheelchair ramp was installed in the back of the house, and improvements were made to the first-floor bathroom. These updates are being financed with a grant from the National Fraternity from our Michigan Alpha OneFund, which is funded from your donations. Thank you to our loyal alumni for your continuous support! With our cash situation improving, we would love to hear your thoughts and ideas on future chapter house improvements.
