T he year began with a robust start for Alpha Lambda. We are proud to be the largest fraternity at Oregon State and to be leaders both on campus and in the community. While the academic year did not conclude in a traditional way—with students shifting to online classes and virtual graduation ceremonies—our brothers are rising to the challenge. The strength of our brotherhood still serves as the foundation of Alpha Lambda––positively impacting the lives of young men, as it has for more than a century. For more details, see the chapter update provided by High Alpha Angel Medrano '18-1983 (see Page 4). We urge you to read both personal descriptions by Les Green '47-535 and Angel of the lasting positive impact that Lambda Chi makes in the lives of young men. The parallels are striking, even though they joined Alpha Lambda's brotherhood more than 70 years apart. This lasting impact underscores why we consider it so crucial that we collectively ensure the legacy of Lambda Chi Alpha at Oregon State University. CHALLENGE MADE, CHALLENGE MET! When we highlighted the challenge gift made by Lucinda and John Fournier '90-1335, we hoped to see a number of brothers step up. Brothers not only answered the call to reach the $50,000 challenge, but we exceeded it with more than $85,000 in donations, resulting in over $135,000 in new commitments in two months. Thanks to everyone that stepped up! Nearly $1.1 million has been raised through Building for Our Second Century, with just over 100 brothers and friends committing to the campaign so far. We are grateful for the generosity of everyone who has made a commitment. OUR NEXT MILESTONE As we have said before, the chapter house is well past its useful life and is the #1 challenge that must be addressed to secure Alpha Lambda's future. To make a new house a reality, our goal is to triple the number of donors to the campaign—raising an additional $900,000, to reach $2 million. CAMPAIGN TEMPORARILY PAUSED – SPRING AND SUMMER 2020 During the turbulent past few months, we decided that it was best to temporarily pause the capital campaign. We considered this to be crucial given the hardships that many have faced during this challenging time. However, the need at Alpha Lambda remains pressing, so we are now moving forward again with the campaign—understanding that it is not possible for some to make a campaign commitment at this time. However, if you are blessed enough to have employment security and the means to do so, your pledge to the campaign is greatly appreciated. Use the enclosed pledge form or set up easy recurring payments through our online donation portal at tinyurl.com/LCA2ndCentury. STAYING CONNECTED Given this unprecedented time of social separation, the need to stay connected has never been greater. We are thrilled to announce that Jake Daniel '18-1984, High Rho/Alumni Relations, and Tom Windall '77-1990 have teamed up and are providing 'virtual reunions' – an innovative solution to overcome the current restrictions on social gatherings (See Page 10). There is no better time to call, text or engage with ΛΧΑ brothers via a virtual reunion. Founded in 1917 during WWI, Alpha Lambda experienced challenging and tumultuous times at the outset. In just the second year of operations, the chapter prevailed during the Spanish Flu pandemic of 1918. The strength of the brotherhood our founders established has ensured that Alpha Lambda has overcome obstacles and thrived at OSU for more than 100 years. 2020 has presented many challenges for sure, but it is our brotherhood and each of you that will help ensure that our second century is even better than our first! It was even a surprise for Lester "Les" Green '47-535. Les began at Oregon State after serving in the Navy during World War II. During that time, every university in the country was struggling to house this first class after the war. Luckily during recruitment, Les stayed at Lambda Chi Alpha and his long-term relationship with the fraternity began. On the Carter family farm, Les grew up with Joe Carter '36-258 and Doug Carter '39-293, who joined Lambda Chi and set up Les's stay at Alpha Lambda during recruitment. The two of them were instrumental in Les joining as well. Les soon learned that the Umatilla Club had been the forerunner to Alpha Lambda and was comprised significantly of members from Umatilla County. This included two men (Alfred Straughan '17-4 and Orson Straughan '17-8) who grew up down the road from him – both were Umatilla Club members as well as founding members of Alpha Lambda of Lambda Chi Alpha. Coincidently another member of the The Continuity of Lambda Chi Lester Green '47-535 Followed Alpha Lambda's Heritage (Continued on page 7) Les and Marylou Green enjoyed a 70-year marriage after meeting at OSU.
