supplies:
• Cardboard (The back of a
paper pad works well)
• Dish (large enough to hold
your tree, with room for the
crystals to grow)
• Scissors
• Water
• Small jar with a tight-fitting lid
• Table salt
• Mrs. Stewart's Bluing* (can be
found in grocery stores)
• Household ammonia (speeds
up evaporation)
• Green food coloring (optional)
Directions:
1. First, make your cardboard
tree by drawing a 2 triangle tree
shapes on the cardboard. Make
your tree about 3 inches wide by 4
inches tall.
2. Cut out the triangles, then
cut out the branches on one tree
and use that tree to trace the
branches on the second
tree.
3. When both trees are
cut out, cut a 2-inch slot
on the top of one and the
at bottom of the other so
they will slide together.
Join the shapes at the
slots.
4. Mix together in the
jar:
• 4 tablespoons warm
water
• 4 tablespoons table salt
• 4 tablespoons Mrs. Stewart's
Bluing*
• 2 tablespoons ammonia
(handling the ammonia is your
adult's job)
5. Fasten the lid and shake well,
then pour the solution into the
saucer or bowl
6. Before adding the cardboard
tree to the dish of magic crystal
liquid, you can paint it with green
food coloring. Or add food
coloring to the dish.
7. Then place the tree in the
saucer or bowl and wait for the
magic to happen.
8. Leave the tree undisturbed.
