see what christmas was like 100 years ago!
Hey kids! The
Rogers Historical
Museum invites
you and your
family to take a
trip into the past and see what kinds
of food and treats people enjoyed at
Christmas-time more than 100 years
ago!
For many families, the celebration
of Christmas would not be complete
without a feast and lots of special
sweet and salty treats. Many of the
foods and food related activities we
enjoy at Christmastime today, as well
as some that have been lost over time,
were being enjoyed by folks in our
community over a century ago.
This fun guided tour will show
examples of family food traditions and
holiday decorations popular at the turn-
of-the-twentieth century in the Ozarks.
The Hawkins House will be decorated
in traditional pine boughs and holly,
old-fashioned toys and of course a
Christmas tree trimmed with a popcorn
and cranberry garland. Stepping back
in time, you'll see Mrs. Hawkins'
kitchen, her cooking methods and
some of her Christmas menu choices.
Some of them will surprise you! For
instance, who would consider having a
passenger pigeon with chestnut stuffing
for Christmas dinner or a side-dish of
sweet pickled crabapples? Yuck!
In accordance with the City of Rogers
COVID –19 policy, acceptable face
coverings are required to be worn
during your visit and tour group size
will be limited to allow for social
distancing.
Due to the pandemic, the museum
is open Thursday, Friday and
Saturday. For current hours or more
information, ask your adult to visit
www.rogershistoricalmuseum.org or
call 479-621-1154. General admission is
free.
