7. 1980s - star Wars action figures George Lucas' movie "Star Wars" was released in May 1977. The movie was so successful that by Christmas of that year, a toy company called Kenner decided to sell action figures. They produced 3.75-inch versions of Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia, Hans Solo, Chewbacca, Darth Vader and other characters, which were released in 1978. Star Wars movies continued to be released and the figures continued to sell. Today, after 12 Star Wars films, the original 1978 figures are worth up to $200,000. 8. 1980s – cabbage Patch Kids In 1983, a collection of remarkably cute, squishy-faced dolls hit the market just in time for Christmas. Both boys and girls wanted to "adopt" one of the "soft sculpture" dolls invented by a 21-year old art student named Xavier Roberts. Over three million were sold in 1983, at a retail price of $25. For years, the dolls remained high on Christmas lists. The craze faded but "Babyland General" is still open to the public today in Cleveland, Georgia, where you can visit and witness the "birth" of a hand-stitched Cabbage Patch Kid, and "adopt" one for a whopping $295. 9. 1990s – beanie babies and tickle me elmo Christmas 1996 two gifts were on kids' lists: tiny stuffed animals called Beanie Babies, and the stuffed version of the popular Sesame Street character—the red, giggling Tickle Me Elmo. Toymaker H. Ty Warner made more than $250 million in sales by the end of 1996 from sales of the soon-to-be-collectible Beanie Babies. Tickle Me Elmo was priced at $28.99, and due to Tyco Toys not being able to meet customer demand, people were desperate to find Elmo. By the end of 1997, sellers on the internet were charging up to $1500 per doll. Tickle Me Elmo is still being sold from $20-$40. 10. 2000s – Wii Just before the Christmas season of 2006, Japanese electronics company Nintendo introduced a game console that was more affordable than Xbox 360 and Playstation 3. The family- friendly alternative offered wireless remote controllers and other new features. Its Just Dance, Wii Sports and Super Mario Brothers were some of its most popular games. Shoppers waited in long lines for hours for the new Wii console, which by Christmas sold over 3 million units. 11. 2010s – legos The original interlocking Lego bricks were invented by a carpenter in Denmark in 1949, and the Lego brand has been successful for decades. The modern Lego brick was patented in 1958, making it virtually impossible for competitors to copy. During the mid-2010s, Lego Minecraft, partnered with the popular game, was at the top of Christmas lists, as well as Star Wars Legos. Movies, games, competitions and Legoland amusement parks are part of the Lego fun now, making The Lego Group the world's largest toy company in 2015 with sales of $2.1 billion. 12: 2020: monopoly: the star Wars mandalorian edition Game with action Figure For most of this year in a pandemic, people have been staying home a lot more. Now that winter is around the corner, indoor activities that provide hours of entertainment will be at the top of Christmas lists. Star Wars films are still going strong, and Monopoly is one of the most time-honored board games in history. The merging of the classic game, inspired by the Disney live action TV series, Mandalorian, is sure to keep kids and adults alike engaged indoors throughout the winter months. source: History.com OfficialKidsmag.com • December 2020 • 43 Name: Official Kids Mag 4 x 2" Customer Name: FLOWERS N FRIENDS Ad Number: 102520NWR7921 479-846-2137 • 479-790-2708 114 E.
