Box 1802 Sonoma, CA 95476 © 2020 by Vicki Whiting Happy September, We live in an age of information that can take us on adventures, give us access to knowledge, help us fulfil our dreams and lead us on to success in our lives. We all want that. We can achieve these goals by becoming better readers. Kid Scoop News helps you read and the more you read, the better you will read. So much depends on reading, from computer lessons to texts on phones. We use our Brain to read, and so we have a page here to show you how a brain works. Frederick Douglass was able to read and write even though he was enslaved. He went on to write a book about his life and he helped end slavery. September 17 is Constitution Day and one of the freedoms given us by the Constitution is the right to freedom of speech. Our spotlight page will help you understand what that means. And this issue has lots of fun things to do too from Outdoor Games that involve getting some exercise, to Space Rocks that explains all those rocks hurtling through space and then a page on Gorillas and how to draw one. I'm ready to read, read, read. This year I'm going to expand my mind and I hope you are too. Dear Readers, Wearing a Mask ........ Freedom of Speech ... Space Rocks .............. Draw a line connecting each pair of beetles that match. eetles have a special body part that makes them, well, beetles. This special body part is a hard exo-skeleton that covers their wings. Called elytra (El-ih-truh), these hard "wings" provide protection and more. Some beetles trap moisture on their wings, allowing them to survive in the desert. Other kinds of beetles are able to live under water because they trap air in their wings and keep it under the elytra. 2 Why do mummies like the holidays so much? They're into all the wrapping! I'm thinking of all those December words— holidays, cookies, family, trees, celebrations, decorations, gingerbread, presents, candles, joy, snow, sleighbells and on and on. Can you add to this list? Let's start December with the Gift of Reading and the more you read, the more you will succeed. There's lots of entertaining word games on this page to help you read. What's the weather doing? Is it cold and rainy, snowy, frosty? When it's cold outside there are still lots of ways to exercise indoors. Just put on some music and dance for joy and good health! Maybe it's sunny where you live, but that probably doesn't mean you can put on a swimsuit and sunbathe outside. The Winter Sun page has an explanation of what is happening. Time on your hands and looking for a project? Create a Gingerbread House! It would be fun for each member of the family to create their own house and then you would have a gingerbread village. There are instructions too to draw a Gingerbread Man. Today Ruby Bridges is 66 years old and 60 years ago, she walked past a mob of angry people and became the first African American child to go to school with white children in New Orleans. Her story is fascinating. Our team here at Kid Scoop News wishes you all good health and happiness throughout the holiday season. Be healthy and happy and always keep reading!
