One of my favorite quotes is, "Want to make God laugh? Tell him your plans." Many of us have been involved in strategic planning over the past 5-10 years within our business, civic, religious, and other organizations, establishing things like a "Vision 2020" plan. For instance, if you regularly read our Fraternity magazine The Scroll, you will recognize "Phi Delta Theta 2020." So here we are, deep into 2020, and all aspects of our lives have been affected by COVID-19. We've certainly learned a great deal about this virus, but just as importantly, we've learned about ourselves. Many "seasoned" brothers may have been quarantined from friends and families. Younger alumni Phis may have been displaced from their offices and are now homeschooling and Zoom-calling aficionados. And sadly, some of our alumni—or their loved ones—may have been consumed by this scourge. Thankfully, Indiana Zeta marches along with no serious COVID-related illness within their ranks! As we covered in the spring issue, longtime House Corporation President Darrell Johnson '85 (while certainly not anticipating a pandemic) has long prepared for business interruption contingencies. With that as well as the past generosity of so many alumni, our capital position permits us to keep the doors open for reduced head counts. Also, the house corporation hired a daily cleaning and disinfecting service and a no-contact, outsourced food service. We will indeed have deficit spending this year, but the Chapter keeps rolling along! As for DePauw, fewer than 800 students are on campus this year. The largest Fraternity (that's us) physically brought back only 23 members, making it among the largest live-in Greek residences for the fall. The other two-thirds of our men are studying remotely. Some houses have as few as eight students living in, and Pi Phi did not even open their doors this semester. We hope you are as proud of our undergraduates as we are. They have made the best of both on- and off- campus situations and kept each other out of harm's way. We hope you are all well too, and that we find our way back to "normalcy" in 2021 and beyond. Yours in the Bond, Chris "CJ" Johnston '83 House Corporation Trustee cl.johnston83@gmail.com HEALTHY AND SAFE ON CAMPUS
