DTD e Shield Delta Tau Delta • Beta Alpha Chapter Alumni Newsletter • Fall 2020 Plans Continue for Our Return to Campus Join Your Brothers in Setting the Stage for Future Generations B y now I had hoped that we would be bringing you news of a Beta Alpha "reboot" at IU. However, the efforts of the alumni core group, including Rob Hudson '91 and me, have not borne the fruit we had hoped. The University seems adamant in their resolve to see the full 5 ¾ year sentence be served. We have tried diligently, with the help of Jack Kreman at the Central Office, to convince them that the Brothers in the house when the chapter was suspended are no longer on campus, and the punitive nature of this sentence, to no avail. Notwithstanding the University's resolve, by the time you receive this Shield, the Central Office will have submitted a petition to recolonize in the spring of 2021. The administrators who were on campus when the infractions were adjudicated are no longer employed by the University, but their replacements see no benefit in second-guessing those decisions. Moving on from there, we have had more than a dozen alumni who have honored their oath to lifelong service to Delta Tau Delta and agreed to provide guidance to the Delts as advisor and assistant advisors when we get started. We have begun writing the governing documents that will guide our Brothers through the colonization and into the installation as a chapter. Whenever we get the go-ahead, we should be ready for installation no later than spring 2023. It is our feeling that we can utilize the services of any alumni who would like to be a part of the alumni core group, as there is much work to do. If you are interested in being involved, please contact me. The house corporation has entered into a lease with Pi Kappa Alpha from August 2020 through May 2023. We are hopeful that our new chapter will be ready to occupy the Shelter by August 2023. You may recall from your pledgeship that the original chapter designation at IU was Nu Chapter, formed in 1870. In 1874, Nu Chapter closed, and in 1887 when Delta Tau Delta returned to IU, it was opened as Beta Alpha Chapter. The first 20 pin numbers on the role from 1887 were 20 alumni from the old Nu Chapter. It took 13 years for the return to campus and those 20 alumni set the stage for the wonderful experience we all had in our time in Bloomington. I am hopeful that we are going to set the stage for our future Brothers as well as those Nu Chapter alumni did. Ski free, my Brothers, Ken Glass '76 (317) 590-6925 | krgh2oski@aol.com F rom the moment Pierre Twer '83 visited Indiana University and the Delta Tau Delta Shelter his senior year of high school for Little 500 weekend, Beta Alpha had his heart. Pierre loved living at 1431 North Jordan for all four of his years at IU, and he's still reaping the rewards of his Delt experience more than three decades later. "It wasn't until months after receiving my bid card that I realized this was the best decision I could have made. I have lifelong friends to this day," Pierre said. "The Delt house at IU was also right next to Delta Zeta. That's where I met my wife, Susan, my senior year and we celebrated 35 years of marriage in August." Pierre was thankful to keep a strong connection with Beta Alpha after graduating, as his brother, Michael Twer '90, followed in his footsteps to IU and Delta Tau Delta. After serving in various chapter officer positions for Beta Alpha, Pierre took what he learned from those leadership opportunities and applied it throughout his career. Pierre has worked in the cardiovascular field for the last 24 years with the past 15 years being spent as the Indiana sales manager for Abbott Structural Heart. "I work in the operating room selling heart valves to cardiac surgeons," Pierre said. "It has been a wonderful career working with these gifted professionals and watching patients heal with great products." Pierre's life-changing work hasn't just been limited to the operating room. In 2010, Pierre and a few of his peers were working to establish Heart Reach Carmel with the goal of giving back to the community. Shortly before they began foundational planning, Pierre had an aha moment while running the Boston Marathon that has helped him and his colleagues save lives in Carmel and many miles beyond. "During the marathon, a father who was running had a sudden cardiac arrest at mile 21 and was saved by the medics on the course with an automated external defibrillator," Pierre said. "He survived thanks to these heroes and the electrical shock his heart needed. This was a key moment for us and became our mission, placing lifesaving AEDs into the hands of organizations that need them." Heart Reach Carmel became Bolt for Heart in 2012. Pierre has served as president and has helped the organization grow with the help of two of his Beta Alpha Brothers, Greg Elsner '84 and Joseph Muldoon '87. Greg was completing a medical exam on an Indiana State Trooper and found out that he didn't have an AED in his patrol car. Bolt for Heart has since partnered with the Indiana State Police and has placed 468 AEDs in state trooper cars statewide. "We are now focused on each of the 92 sheriff departments in the state and blanketing Indiana with an AED in every law enforcement patrol in the state," Pierre said. "The Michigan State Police Department has embraced our mission and just completed their second annual Bolt 5K in August." The family feel of Beta Alpha and Bolt for Heart extends to Pierre's own family. His twin daughters, Erika and Ashley, ran with Pierre in the Carmel Bolt for Heart 5K in 2019. Erika, Ashley, and his son, Adam, all graduated from IU and work in the medical field. You can connect with Pierre at ptwer@me.com.
