Keeping Close with Kappa Alpha Fall 2020 O ver the summer, the House Corporation Board oversaw several improvement projects to our Chapter House. While this semester will certainly be different than any other in Kappa Alpha's history, we are confident in our active sisters' ability to get through the fall semester safely. Our tri-board grew over the summer with the Executive, Advisory, and House Corporation boards working together to come up with the proper precautions to protect all of our members. Prior to the fall semester, we spent numerous hours attending webinars to prepare and educate our active members on COVID-19 safety. Working in our favor, we have hired a catering and cleaning service to take some of that responsibility off of our shoulders. Additionally, the House Corporation is meeting monthly via Zoom to stay on top of the state of the pandemic and to keep health and safety guidelines a top priority. Many thanks to all who have stepped up during these meetings! Aside from the routine maintenance at 1516 McCain Lane, we completed a large pipe replacement project in the basement study room. Leaks from last summer caused damage, but with the new pipes installed we were able to redo the flooring, paint, and furniture. Active sisters were impressed by the quality of their newly renovated basement upon moving in this fall. Projects next on our list include installing new insulation in the attic, assessing the damaged north driveway, and purchasing new beds to replace the 25-year-old bunk beds. It is our duty as alumnae to help keep our beautiful home in pristine condition, and there will certainly be more important projects on the horizon. In July, we began our Emergency Chapter Housing campaign, which wrapped up on September 15. In total, we raised $52,130 thanks to 204 generous donors. These funds will be used for the Chi Omega Holding Association, Inc. operating fund. We want to extend a huge thank-you to everyone who donated to this important cause; the bonds of our sisterhood are stronger than ever! We are looking forward to having her back in the fold. We would also like to welcome four new House Corporation members: Tara Burkhart '07, Alison Burton '12, Taylor Rahe Farrar '13, and Katelyn Winn '13. We look forward to witnessing what these women accomplish on the board. Thank you all so much for the support you have given through the years. Kappa Alpha will certainly be able to weather this storm thanks to our dedicated alumnae and active sisters. House Director Jan Tidball assesses Kappa Alpha's internet situation so that active members will have strong Wi-Fi connection for their online classes and virtual recruitment. A s Kappa Alpha forges on with the fall semester, the Chapter Advisory Board's main focus is helping the actives navigate these challenging times. The collegians have lost out on a lot of the Kappa Alpha and K-State experiences that we all had. As advisors, we are trying to find a way to keep our bonds strong and cultivate meaningful relationships with our new members. Recruitment was a little different this year. However, the actives overcame a lot of challenges with a completely virtual recruitment. They did a great job of showcasing our amazing sisterhood via Zoom. We have a great new member class of 44 women and are looking forward to showing them what Kappa Alpha is all about. The collegians appreciate all the words of encouragement they have received during the pandemic from alumnae. We are all in this together as Kappa Alphas, and the collegians need us now more than ever. I can't thank you all enough for reaching out to them. If you wish to send them a letter of encouragement, feel free to email me and I will forward it to them.
