Brown finds that elders with hearing loss have particular challenges, because they often rely on visual clues, such as facial expressions and lips moving, and they can't see them when people are wearing masks. "Hearing is the heart of the prob- lem for some people," she says, and it might be a good time to consider getting hearing aids. Apps that caption what someone says are also available for mobile phones, and individuals working with seniors could use shields instead of masks. "Now more than ever, older people need our help. There are lots of ways we can connect, even though we can't," Brown says. Local seniors are doing their best to cope. "I've been impressed by how strong and resilient our older community in Marin is, and how they help each oth- er," Geisse says. "We are so smart and so creative. We can adapt and still remain resilient, even in this unprecedented time," Arbore adds. "We have to be as present as possible with people who are feeling lonely.
