ALPHA PILOT Alpha Pi Chapter of Beta Theta Pi at the University of Wisconsin FALL 2020 THE I 'm pleased to report house improvements stayed on track despite COVID-19 challenges. Today, the actives are enjoying a newly renovated kitchen, dining room, foyer, lobby, stairs, and study hall. We also have a new boiler and first floor guest restroom. Next up will be a remodeled billiards room, living room, and air conditioning system. The renderings provide a glimpse into the future of 622 Mendota Court, where all Alpha Pi brothers get the chance to live Beta Theta Pi's values while building lasting bonds of friendship and brotherhood. Consider Room Naming Contributions We will honor larger donations through a naming rights program. Ted Kellner '69, Fred Goetzke '91, and Jeff White '91 have qualified for newly renovated rooms while over a dozen individuals are in line for dorm rooms. In addition to personal honors, naming a room to honor a living brother or in memory of a deceased brother is a great way to express respect and admiration. Think of the brothers who most influenced or contributed to your days at Alpha Pi. The newly renovated first floor Executive Board/Study Hall has been set aside to honor Tom "OB" Oberwetter '74. See the room naming opportunities list below. Please Submit Your Signed Pledge The total pledges now exceed $912,000. Additional verbal commitments have been promised, but until we receive a signed pledge card or email confirmation these verbal amounts cannot be counted in our campaign total. Signed confirmation of your verbal pledge will move us much closer to our goal of $1.5 million. If you are considering contributing to the campaign but have not sent in a signed pledge, please do so now. Actives Step Up in Support of Renovations and the Capital Campaign It has been very rewarding to see the actives provide both time and treasure toward the house improvements. Throughout this process, the actives have demonstrated Beta's core values, especially mutual assistance, responsible conduct, and integrity. CJ Adourian '22 and John Boosalis '20 were critical members of the first floor design team and provided on-site support throughout the summer. CJ also spent a day with Rod Taylor '72 to safely secure historic Badger pennants donated by Rod in the Billiards Room and Living Room. After Bob Downing '91 donated landscaping and cleanup services around the house, the actives, led by Charlie Mavon '23, took the lead in solving long-standing problems inside the house and with the garbage service out front. In a significant demonstration of their commitment to the future of Alpha Pi, the actives agreed to provide $5,000 per semester for house maintenance and improvements through a parlor fee. As much as Ted enjoyed being a walk-on on the Badgers basketball team at his dream school, he wanted to figure out how to bring the close-knit community feel he grew up around to a university of nearly 40,000 students. Enter Beta Theta Pi. "I met what have become lifelong friends through the Beta house," Ted said. "What the Beta house did for me was downsize the university and gave me friendships that have endured to today because of the people I met back then. I just had a terrific experience. It was a group of guys that I related to, so the Beta house became very special to me in my last three and a half years at the university." Beta has remained very special to Ted and several others from his era, and they've shown their appreciation for Alpha Pi ever since graduating from UW-Madison. In 1968, Ted and five other brothers founded the Beta Fund. "It was an investment club that initially had about six of us in it and now has about 15. We started it with about $6,000 and put some money into it over the years. The fund now is at about $28 million," Ted said. "We have annual conventions and get together. As we were doing some renovations on the house, we went back in the fall of 2018 for a All About Alpha Pi Ted Kellner '69 Shares Excitement About Beta's Future at UW-Madison (Continued on back) Save the date for two upcoming anniversaries — the chapter celebrates 150 years in 2023 and the house turns 100 in 2026!
