THE ZETA CHI PIKELINE 3 Brotherhood Will Get Us throUGh What Andrew Waddell '91 Sees in Pi Kappa Alpha A s a third-generation family business owner, Andrew Waddell '91 had a solid business acumen when he took the reins. He also had strong leadership skills thanks to his time with Pi Kappa Alpha. Coupled with his ROTC and military experience, Andrew's time with Zeta Chi, including as chapter president, helped shape the man he became. "e whole experience put me in a strong position for success," he believes. "If you don't have brotherhood in your life, you don't have anything." Andrew runs multiple dry cleaners in the St. Louis area, continuing the work his grandfather began in the 1930s. Unfortunately, his business is one of many that have suffered during the COVID-19 pandemic. In the early weeks, safety restrictions forced them to closed temporarily; that has since changed. "Dry cleaners were not considered 'essential' until they realized that we are for other essential workers," Andrew explained. Even so, the stores have seen a strong decrease since reopening. "Most of our clientele are frequent 'dry clean only' customers, and with fewer people working and others working from home, business has definitely dipped." Andrew is closely networked with other dry cleaner owners around the U.S. and says most of them are reporting similar numbers. With hardships such as these, Andrew understands why some brothers may have lost touch over the years. "Life throws you curves and change does invariably happen; it's how you handle that and decide to go forward." Andrew has remained in touch with many brothers and looks forward to seeing them again when they can safely congregate. "Getting back to basics and reconnecting is simple enough. It's just a matter of having the right opportunity to get together." If Missouri State can still hold Homecoming in the fall, Andrew looks forward to seeing everyone able to attend the Zeta Chi celebration; in fact, he is a volunteer leader for the fall 1990 pledge class, as the event will mark their 30-year reunion. Andrew accepted the opportunity during last year's Homecoming and is hopeful for a strong turnout, safety permitting. "We're the biggest pledge class in MSU history—about 50 guys, and we're hoping at least half will be able to make it." Andrew is an active Ironman triathlete and travels with groups to compete nationwide. He is happy married and is focused on helping set his two MSU graduate daughters up for success. I 'm happy to say that even in these difficult times Zeta Chi has continued to succeed and shown nothing but growth in our academics and our lives. rough the summer and into the fall, we have transitioned two executive members into office. James McCann '18 is now serving as recruitment chairman and Michael Bugajski '18 is new member educator. Addressing COVID-19 on Campus Missouri State University has mandated wearing masks on campus, proper social distancing, and offered virtual classes to promote good health and a safe environment to learn. Many of you might ask how this will affect recruitment. e answer to that is minimal for now. All recruitment events follow city and county guidelines, meaning there is a maximum 75 people at events, masks must be worn in and outside of the chapter house, and no food is served at events. Zeta Chi is working diligently to plan and execute a fall semester that will be beneficial and promote the growth of our men. We look forward to seeing you all this upcoming season!
