for 1,400 yards and 10 touchdowns as a sophomore. The junior signal caller has a pair of receivers who can make things happen. Trent Alik caught 31 passes for 386 yards and four touchdowns last year while Levi Malone had eight catches for 187 yards and three touchdowns. "We feel like we could have a good year in the passing game," Hoover said. "Cole has gotten more comfortable out there. The game has obviously slowed down for him. He is making his reads so much better than he did a year ago. Obviously, a year of maturity physically has gotten him bigger, stronger and faster. "Malone is kind of a burner for us. He just glides out there. It doesn't look like he is running hard, but he is actually running past people. Trent is the one we want to get the ball in space and let him go make a play." Gone due to graduation is Michael W i l l i a m s . W i l l i a m s w a s a k e y receiver as well as the Mustangs' l e a d i n g t a c k l e r o n d e f e n s e . Cross Dowd, Jack Parnell, Eli McClain and Kyle Hook are expected to battle to be the third receiver. Junior Logan Harriman and sopho- more Weston Gordon will split time at tight end along with senior Jackson Clarkson. "We should be able to move the ball, but we have to improve our execution," Hoover said. "We had too many mistakes that ended drives and shifted momentum last year. We did better as the year went along, but with more experience coming back, we will see better execution earlier and on a more consistent basis." Defensively the biggest change this year for the Mustangs is not personnel, but switch to a three-man front from a four-man. "It's kind of a hybrid 3-4," Hoover said. "It has a 3-4 structure to it with the hope of getting a free runner on every play." Campbell and Gricks will anchor the line with Neale, Grider and Saylor to fill the other spot and taking some of the load off the starters. Linebackers will be a strength with returning starters, Levi Helm, Clarkson and Eliam being joined by Jared Mora with Gordon and Lewis expected to fill in as needed. Alik and Malone lead the secondary with Parnell, Dowd, Colton Ruddick and Pierce Harmon fighting for the remain- ing two starting positions. "We hope to be able to run to the football pretty well," Hoover said. "We should be able to play fast and make tackles. Trent is a two-year starter at defensive back and consistently brings energy and competitiveness on every play. As a senior we expect him to really take charge." Hoover said he has not set a certain number of wins as a goal, but instead wants to compete night in and night out for a win. "I expect our team to compete every single day," Hoover said. "In a tough Big 8 Conference we are going to have to improve every day to be at our best. We have to be ready every week." McDonald County opens its season on Aug. 28 at Aurora.
