Page 22 - shelby shopper & info - 704/484-1047 www.shelbyinfo.com Thursday, July 1-July 7, 2010 Shelby’s Bryan Thrift wrapped up what can only be described as a dream year. Bryan saw his first win in the FLW tournament series and after last week’s event h after last week’s event, he is now the FLW 2010 Angler of the Year. “Angler of the Year is all about consistency,” he said. “It means that I’ve caught the most... not just for a week, but over the whole year. You can’t have one bad tournament. Heck, you can’t even have one mediocre tournament; these guys are too good.” “A lot of things went my way this year. I didn’t lose many fish and I’ve got a great sponsor (Damiki) that is producing some awesome new baits.” One of his go to baits was a Damiki Mega Miki, an 11-inch worm that has a cup tail. “I caught some on a Miki, some on spoon, some on a ChatterBait, some on a jig and some on a crankbait. Coming into today, I knew my area was pretty beat up. I basically did what I needed to do.” Looking back at the season, Thrift had a year that included four top-10 finishes, his first FLW Tour win and now AOY. “I’ve wanted both so bad. To get them in same year is like shoot- ing two birds with one stone. Hopefully I’ll get a few more shots in the future.” A huge congrats Bryan on an awesome year. Bryan Thrift KOSA The Kosa retirees fished Lake Wylie last week. A different lake with the same results as the past few weeks. John Black and Roger McNeilly continued their winning ways with 13.20. They also brought in big bass of the day with a 3.20 largemouth. Second place with 10.0 was Mack Wyatt and Johnny Christainberry. Ronnie Humphries, fishing solo, took third with 9.85. This week it is Lake Norman, and with the predicted cooler weather and a 6am start, those guys better be prepared, John and Roger will work “pinkie” to death. Moss Last week only 14 boats went for the weekly Thursday night bass tournament on Moss Lake. “I guess they were all afraid it was gonna rain”, said tournament organizer Arnold Ledford. Brian and Cody Hoyle won with 7.60. Ronnie Humphries finished in second with 6.05 followed by Reggie Guffy with 5.90. Humphries and Guffy shared in the big fish award as both had a 2.35 largemouth. CCBC The Cleveland County Bass Club will fish their July event on Lake Norman July 24 from 2am til 10 am. The top ten in points going into that event are: James Osborne, Tyler Hensley, Roger Beaver, Chuck Camp, John Prenell, Roger Hamrick, Ray Hembree, Tom Mayhew, Jimmy Melton and Larry Melton. Lake Norman could make a huge swing for some, up or down. If anyone has any suggestions on stories or pictures of their catch or kill, you can e-mail me at plail5@carolina.rr.com. Yesteryear From The Pastrom The Past esteryear MemoriesMemories Aiming Outdoorsmen oward Christ Aiming Outdoorsmen Toward Christ Thomas Paine wrote, concerning our freedom; “That which we obtain too cheap, we esteem too lightly; it is dear- ness only that gives every thing its val- ue.” That statement could be applied to many things in our lives, whether it’s our freedom to own a gun and hunt or our freedom to worship, or even our free- dom of speech. It does seem that, many times we “esteem these things too lightly”, be- cause many of us have “obtained” them at a price paid by someone else or one “obtained” at a very cheap cost to our- selves. When I think about that statement, I think of all of those who are overseas, who are paying the price for the free- doms that you and I are enjoying here and now. I’m so thankful that the soil that I turn is not full of land mines and the skies that I stand in awe of are not fi lled with bombers and fi ghter jets. I’m so thankful that I am not under a dictatorship and that my money and goods are not distributed equally among everyone else. The price of these freedoms was not obtained cheap, and neither are they protected that way. As you have heard, “freedom is not free”. Outdoorsmen and outdoorswomen ought to be the most patriotic people around and our children ought to be the same. FOR SALE FOR SALE WHIRLPOOL STOVE $75. Gen- eral Electric Dryer, $50. We must not only teach them to hunt and fi sh and enjoy the outdoors, but to respect and honor those who carry a gun into a foreign land so we can carry one into a familiar one. But not only are our military protect- ing freedom, they are also providing it to any one who will take it. Why? Because freedom is not an American property and we are not its owners. We are simply one of its stewards. Freedom is a gift of God for every- one. To keep it to ourselves would be like having the cure for cancer and yet not sharing it with the world. Freedom makes us obligated. Sometimes the cure is painful. Just ask those who have gone through che- motherapy or radiation. But the pain will lead to a better life. May God bless all of those who enjoy freedom. May God bless all who yearn for freedom. And may God bless all of those who are protecting and providing freedom. 303 W. Grover St. Shelby, NC 303 W.
