6 Official Kids Mag www.kidscoop.com Vicki Whiting June/July 2020 • 8 sticks for toasting the marshmallows • 16 graham crackers • 8 bars plain chocolate (any of the good plain brands broken in two) • 16 marshmallows Have you ever wondered where the name marshmallow comes from? To find the answer, you go to the wetlands or the marsh! For centuries, people boiled the roots of the mallow plant to make a sweet, white, sticky goo. This mallow plant grew in the marsh, so they called it a marsh mallow. The original marshmallow confections were created by mixing this goo with sugar or honey. Today, marshmallows are no longer made from the mallow plant. But the name has stuck! S= The number of times the word goo appears in this article multiplied by 3. K = The number of words in the explanation of how s'more got its name. 17 1 8 11 6 1 8 8 1 4 W = The number of chocolate bars in the Girl Scout Handbook recipe for s'mores plus 3. O = The number of servings of s'mores the recipe at left makes. E = The number of ingredients mentioned in the Girl Scout's recipe for s'mores. Toast two marshmallows over the coals to a crispy gooey state. Then put them inside a graham cracker and chocolate bar sandwich. The heat of the marshmallow between the halves of chocolate bar will melt the chocolate bar a bit. Though it tastes like "some more," one is really enough. Makes 8 servings. (From Tramping and Trailing with the Girl Scouts, Girl Scouts of the USA, 1927) N = Add the first two digits of the year that the first s'mores recipe was published. Subtract the number you get by adding the last two digits of that same year. www.kidscoop.com © Vicki Whiting August 2020 Official Kids Mag
