mokey Bear first appeared
as a symbol of wildfire
prevention in 1944.
In the spring of 1950, winds
were pushing a wildfire
through a forest in the
Capitan Mountains of
New Mexico. Firefighters
from far and wide rushed
to put the fire out.
A little bear cub
climbed a tree to
escape the flames
burning on the
ground. He was
only five pounds
and he was very
scared.
Firefighters found
the cub still alive, but
his paws and hind legs were
badly burned. They couldn't
find his mother. The little
bear cub was sent to an animal
doctor to be treated and
bandaged.
A forest service ranger named
Ranger Ray cared for
the cub.
Ray's
4-year-old
daughter
played with
the bear and
cheered him
up.
The little bear was
named Smokey and
moved to the National
Zoo in Washington,
D.C. and he became
the living symbol of
Smokey Bear.
The United States Forest Service
received so many letters from
children for Smokey that he
needed to have his own:
