Not long aer the blue tang start biting, dark storm clouds roll in, characteristic of the day we've had. We drive parallel to the shore trying to stir up some fish, at least enough for a good social media post. Nothing. Soon, even Captain Woody is ready to call it a day. Just as he cranks the motor, my line disappears. Supposing it is caught on a coral, Woody offers to cut the line. I am not convinced and call him off. My hand shudders from the force of the rod whipping back and forth. is is not a piece of coral. THIS is a fish. Soon Woody knows it, too, and as the whipping motion continues, he confirms, "THAT is a barracuda!" e sluggish captain, now suddenly energized, offers to assist in the reel. My husband chimes in, "I wouldn't touch her if I were you. She's got this." Some call me stubborn, I prefer the word committed. In an uncharacteristic display of patience and skill, I dance with that partner for an hour that lasts only 20 minutes before the song ends. What a beauty! What a catch! Landing a barracuda using light tackle on 12-pound line on a panfish hook in shallow water, hooking him perfectly in the side of the jaw, in an approaching storm – what a birthday present! What a story! Never let your story be about the one that got away. I no longer fish with a silver button, but the joy of fishing has never le me. Whether from a pond bank in Cumberland County with a worm or cricket tied to a small hook or from a 42-foot vessel in the British Virgin Islands, fishing continues to invigorate me. Like fishing, life is replete with struggle. Reeling from the effects of a global pandemic and the pain of racism and violence, we are living into "a new normal." Some find that term unsettling, I find it brimming with opportunity and possibility to build a better world. When life is a struggle, embrace it, stay with it, and let the energy of the struggle reverberate through your soul. And remember that, just as with fishing, joy begins in the heart and ends in the bucket. Maybe that's a new reason to call it a bucket list. Never let your life's story be about the one that got away.
