May 1, 2013 Rotary doings; donates to Food Bank By: Violet Kiss, President UPDATE! Quartzsite Rotary delivered a carton (24 packages with 6 servings each, see Photo Page 13) of the Fortified Nutritional Meals that we participated in packing last month to our local Food Bank. As I reported before, we had a blast packing food with the High School in our youngest Rotary's Interact Clubs, this one in Glendale at Washing High. Most noteworthy is the ability to pack vitamins, minerals in a nutritional base as a casserole and it tastes quite well. We all sampled it after our "pack-athon". In fact, I brought one packet to our last Rotary Meeting which is held at Mountain Quail Café, and its owner, Norm Simpson, and fellow Rotarian, will be preparing the casserole for us all to sample. Carol Kelley remembered reading about our adventure but had forgotten about it. After reviewing the ingredients, nutrients and its cooking directions, she asked if we could get more. Carol knows we can use this type of food here. We are very happy to help however and whenever we can, so we will be contacting the original group that we partnered with "Kids Against Hunger", and make the request for our Food Bank. As things warm up (smile) we are planning the Rotary Garden for late Fall and finishing plans for how we, as the Rotary, can help better our community, especially those who could use a helping hand. We are in the process of renewing our Highway Clean-up permit, so please look out for us soon on US-95 just south of Main Street, we will be doing our semi-annual clean-up of the area from Main to Kuehn on both sides. We usually like to clean up just before the Snowbirds and crowds come in October and do the 'aftercrowd' clean-up for our community in April or May. This year, it will be done early to mid May. You'll see us working with bright green vests - let's hope we can get this done before it gets much hotter! QPD National Drug Take-Back Day success By Shanana Rain Golden-Bear Saturday, April 27th, Quartzsite Police Department (QPD) held drug a Take-Back Drug event Saturday in an attempt to help people get rid of unneeded prescriptions. The event, supported by Quartzsite Substance Abuse Prevention Coalition (CSAPC), was an effort to curb pill abuse and drug theft, and to keep the pills from being flushed into the water system. Saturday, Americans emptied medicine cabinets, bedside tables, and kitchen drawers of unwanted, unused, and expired prescription drugs and took them to collection sites located throughout the United States as part of the Drug Enforcement Administration's (DEA) National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day. In an email to Desert Messenger, Quartzsite Police Department wishes to say, "Thank you to all who came and dropped off their unused and unwanted prescription medications to the Quartzsite Police Department. A total of 107.4 pounds of prescriptions will be turned over to the DEA for the initiative." 3 www.DesertMessenger.com According to the 2011 Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration's National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH), more than six million Americans abuse prescription drugs. That same study revealed more than 70 percent of people abusing prescription pain relievers got them through friends or relatives, a statistic that includes raiding the family medicine cabinet. The National Prescription Drug TakeBack Day aims to provide a safe, convenient, and responsible means of disposal, while also educating the general public about the potential for abuse of these medications. If you missed the event, you can drop off unwanted, expired, or unused prescription drugs to Quartzsite Police Department during normal business hours. QPD has been working with QSAPC in an ongoing effort to provide a safe and convenient means of disposal of prescription drugs. Contact QPD with any questions at 928-927-4644. Art fun at Mountain Quail Cafe By Oney Budge The Mountain Quail Cafe started a gift shop this year. In order to keep the accounting straight, the easiest and fastest was to attach a raffle ticket to the merchandise with the artist's name and dollar amount. Soon people were filling them out as if to win something. So why not! This summer's fun will be a weekly drawing for small items and a monthly drawing for larger prizes. All tickets for the month will be entered in the monthly drawing, even if they win the weekly. The 1st of each month we will toss the previous month and start new. The weekly drawing will be held on Sundays between 12-and 1pm. Winners will be posted in the gift area and need to be picked up by the winner, who will be notified that they won a prize.
