While I wouldn't compare grocery shopping to a royal wedding, I do admire my friend's panache. She walks down the aisle with a bit of a swagger, as if to suggest that all the other women in the store are underdressed because they are not wearing hats. Several women I usually see and say hello to don't even make eye contact with me. Whether they are embarrassed at the state of their own hair or horrified at the prospect of having to look at mine I will never know, but, either way, I understand perfectly. We are in uncharted waters, dealing with a situation none of us could possibly have envisioned just a few months ago. I never thought I would be envious of women whose occupations require them to cover their hair. Suddenly, deli workers look like the happiest women on earth as they go about their tasks, undistracted by the fear of exposing a splotchy dye job or a home haircut that went horribly wrong. Now I know why nuns seem so serene—they don't have to bother with the silly, vain concerns that bedevil most women. I have never mastered the art of appearing serene, despite a lifetime of trying. I do, however, think I will be the Queen of Serenity the day I am at last sitting in my hairdresser's chair, watching her cut my hair.
