BeTa TheTa pi 2 D r. Roger Marshall '84 was focused on competing in the state track meet during his senior year of high school when he first learned about Beta Theta Pi, as they had representatives present for recruitment. Bill Manning '80 introduced himself to Roger and told him that Gamma Epsilon Chapter wanted to recruit future leaders. "He somehow knew that I was class valedictorian and a three-sport athlete," Roger said. After joining Gamma Epsilon, Roger found that he and his pledge class pushed each other to greater heights. "We were all like-minded people," Roger said. "To this day, my Beta brothers from my college days are part of my inner circle and advisors." These bonds were built early as brothers helped each other prioritize time through study hours and creating good habits. "We took pride in our class and chapter GPA," Roger said. "This was always the most important goal for us and we all pushed each other to achieve this." Roger served in several positions during his time with Gamma Epsilon, and one of his favorites was rush chairman. "We got to drive my 1976 black Trans Am all across the state," Roger said. Being elected chapter president was one of the greatest honors of Roger's life because he was chosen by those who really knew him. "It's not a beauty or popularity contest," Roger said. "Folks know your weaknesses and strengths. I knew that I was being elected to represent all that Beta Theta Pi stood for both on and off campus." Roger's willingness to serve others followed him beyond his college years. After graduating from Kansas State with a degree in biochemistry, Roger went to the University of Kansas School of Medicine, earning his medical doctorate in 1987. As an OB/GYN doctor, he has delivered over 5,000 babies during his 25 years practicing in Great Bend. In 2016, Roger was elected to represent the Big 1st District of Kansas in the United States Congress. While serving as a congressman, Roger decided to run for a seat in the United States Senate, which he is hopeful to acquire in 2020. Relationships have been the key to Roger's success at each level throughout his political and medical careers. "What I learned about my brothers at 500 Sunset, their personalities, and their upbringing was a great lesson for life and shaped my career in many ways," Roger said. "Now as a congressman, and hopefully senator, the ability to truly honor and respect each member of congress and my constituents is very similar to walking into the Beta house 40-some years ago and being a friend to all in the house," Roger said. Outside of his busy schedule, Roger enjoys spending time with his wife of 37 years, Laina, their four children, and two grandchildren. Additionally, Roger loves staying connected with his Gamma Epsilon brothers with many of them hunting and fishing together along with attending college and professional sporting events.
