Thomas Merritt McEvoy '47 entered Chapter Eternal at the age of 95 on March 2, 2020. He enrolled at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, but postponed his college education to fly B24s during World War II as part of the Army Air Corps (later the Air Force) in the European arena serving with the 491 Bomb Group. Tom returned from the war to MIT, where he was the president Beta Theta Pi. His career started beside his father, where he helped run the family's ecclesiastical garment business. From 1963 until 1987, he served as President of that family business, honored with the Anthony Tocci Scholarship Foundation Labor Management Civic Achievement Award in 1964. Greatly civically engaged, Tom was active in the Boys and Girls Club of New Rochelle, which awarded him Man of the Year in 1972 and helmed the area Rotary Club, which awarded him "Service Above Self" in 1975. Tom served as the President of Wykagyl Country Club and was a Governor for Winged Foot Golf Club in Mamaroneck. Tom loved golf, especially in later years with Susie and any grand-sons-or-daughters hoping for the chance to play those famed links. Tom is survived by his wife of nearly 70 years, Susie McEvoy (they were recently commemorated for being one of the longest married couples in New York Diocese) and his four beloved children, 11 grandchildren, and 3 great-grandchildren. Herbert Voelcker Jr. '51 entered Chapter Eternal on January 23, 2020. He was the stroke of the Lightweight Crew and rifle team captain at MIT. Herb served as a signal officer in the 82nd Airborne Division of the U.S. Army for two years before returning to MIT for his master's degree. During graduate school, Herb met his wife, Jean, whom he shared 65 years of marriage with. Along with starting a career as a research engineer and professor in the mid-1950s, he was a member of the U.S. Army rifle team. Herb competed in the 1956 Olympic Games in Melbourne, Australia. In 1958, he received a two-year Fulbright fellowship and studied at the Imperial College of Science in London. After returning to New York and receiving his doctorate, he started teaching at the University of Rochester. During his teaching career, he received the University of Rochester's Edward Peck Curtis Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching, founded the Production Automation Project, served as the head of the new directorate for advanced manufacturing technologies at the National Science Foundation, and acted as Cornell's Charles W. Lake Jr. chairman. He retired from full-time teaching in 2000 but taught a course a year through 2019 at Cornell. Along with his award-winning teaching career, Herb joined Jean in piloting a succession of various cruisers throughout the northeast, St. Lawrence Seaway, Intracoastal Waterway, and other recreational routes.
