This interruption could have crippled a less prepared chapter and house corporation, but your DePauw Phis are marching along! With the steady and consistent hand of House Corporation President Darrell Johnson '85, ample reserves will allow us to weather this storm. Our staff will be able to be paid throughout the semester, summer projects will commence sooner, and we will be ready for the fall. The undergraduates too have risen to the occasion. Initiation was pushed up to accommodate the truncated schedule and the men are already making plans for brotherhood and recruiting events in the spring and summer. Our hearts go out to our athletes unable to compete as well as to the seniors who are cheated from their final, triumphant lap around campus. These wounds will likely take longer to heal than the residual effects of the virus which had yet to touch campus. All of this speaks to the power of strength, commitment, and coordination of your volunteer alumni and undergraduate leaders. Brotherhood is working at Indiana Zeta! This spring, we've been taken back to our roots with the addition of a new member. When Jack Drake '23 called home to tell his parents that he had pledged Phi Delt at DePauw, his mother remembered some genealogy work she had completed a few years ago. "My mom said, 'You know, Jack, you're related to one of their founders'," Jack said. Turns out, Jack's great-great-great-great-grandfather is indeed Robert Thompson Drake, one of The Immortal Six of Phi Delt. Robert Thompson Drake was originally from just east of Dayton, Ohio, and a bit south of Springfield, a little town of Yellow Springs. Upon graduating Miami University, he entered work as a minister in New Albany, Indiana, just across the river from Louisville then migrated back near his fraternal home of Lebanon, Ohio, about 30 miles east of Oxford. He resided in New Castle, Indiana, until entering Chapter Grand in 1873. He was laid to rest in Lebanon. Jack is a 2020 graduate of Zionsville High School in Indiana and plans to major in economics. While Jack does not know of any other Phi relatives, several Indiana University Sigma Chis are in his family, solidifying this Miami Triad theme. "But they can't say they're related to their founders," Jack joked. We are proud of Jack and proud to be DePauw Phis! Indiana Zeta recently celebrated its 152 year on the DePauw campus where over 2,200 men have signed The Bond. Phi Delt is currently the largest fraternity at DePauw. Yours in the Bond, Chris "CJ" Johnston '83 House Corporation Trustee cl.johnston83@gmail.com Founder Robert Thompson Drake New member and Robert Drake descendant Jack Drake'23 W ith arbitrating well more than 400 insurance coverage cases over the course of his career, it's become second nature for John Cassidy '82 to fight for the best interest of others. John is a founding shareholder of Sudekum, Cassidy & Shulruff, but there was a lot of practice he put in to get to where he is today. Some of that practice came during his days as an undergraduate brother at Indiana Zeta. "Some of the responsibilities that I had with all the different offices made me be responsible in college," John said. "That kind of rolled forward when I went to law school, started practicing law, and for non-for-profit groups that I've been participating in since." John is thankful for all that he learned from Phi Delta Theta along with many lifelong friendships. He enjoyed spending time in the Indiana Zeta Chapter House because no two days were the same, just like with his law career. John has kept several of his Phi Delt friendships strong while serving as the president of the DePauw Alumni Association. "If you're an alumnus and haven't been back for several years, make sure you get back to DePauw and Phi Delta Theta." PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT Phi Delta Theta Prepared John Cassidy '82 for Long Law Career, Leading DePauw Alumni Association (Continued on page 2)
