Blanchard Springs Caverns in the Ozark National Forest near Mountain View has been described as "one of the most spectacular and carefully developed caves found anywhere in the world." The cave system is owned by the U.S. Forest Service, which also offers three kinds of guided tours, from easy to wild. A mountain spring continually alters the formations of stalactites, stalagmites, drapes and others. The cave features an underground river, passages carved by water and the largest flowstone on the planet. Get all the details at blanchardsprings.org. Two mystical underground lakes said to be bottomless and the largest soda straw in the Ozarks are but a few of the jaw-dropping sights you'll encounter at Cosmic Cavern in Berryville, Arkansas. Descent is 400 feet from the opening, and with a 64° year-round temperature and high humidity, it's the warmest cave in the region. Currently, cave specialists are excavating there with hopes of discovering a whole new section. Schedule a tour at Arkansas' largest privately owned cave: cosmiccavern.com. Visitors to Eureka Springs can take a self- guided tour to see the gorgeous subterranean features of Onyx Cave, the oldest show cave in Arkansas. Onyx is a misnomer; it's actually flowstone —also known as cave onyx — that distinguishes the cave. It's only six miles from Eureka and has a newly renovated gift and gem shop. Learn more at onyxcaveeurekasprings.com. You might see bats or salamanders when you take a tour of War Eagle Cavern on Beaver Lake in Rogers, and you will definitely see breathtaking formations like domes, rimstones and waterfalls. The three- story cave has the only lakeside entrance in Arkansas. No need to schedule a tour—just walk in and descend. Other fun activities are the Moonshiners' Mystery Shack, gemstone panning, Lost in the Woods Maze and nature trails. Head to wareaglecavern.com.
