By Shanana Rain Golden-Bear Arizona Governor Doug Ducey and the state's top public health of- fi cial, Health Services Director Dr. Cara Christ hosted a press confer- ence Monday, March 2nd. They were joined by Emergency Manage- ment Director Wendy Smith-Reeve; and the director of the state's Med- icaid program, Jami Snyder. Dr. Christ explained the state has begun testing for the COVID-19 (nov- el coronavirus) as of Monday. She said the state still considers the risk to be low unless you have a history of travel or contact with an infected person. However there's community spread cases in the United States and the chances of coming into con- tact with that are heightened. "Community spread" means peo- ple have been infected with the vi- rus in an area, including some who are not sure how or where they be- came infected. Coronaviruses (CoV) are a large family of viruses that cause illness ranging from the common cold to more severe diseases. A novel corona- virus is a new strain that has not been previously identifi ed in humans. On 30 January 2020, the WHO Director-General declared the novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV) outbreak a public health emergency of inter- national concern. "This is a rapidly revolving re- sponce and my team is watching the world. We can expect additional cases here in Arizona," said Christ. The World Health Organization (WHO) Director Dr. Tedros Adha- nom Ghebreyesus, stated in a media briefi ng Monday, "Of the 88,913 cas- es reported globally so far, 90% are in China, mostly in one province.
