Herb Mama Lavender...Lavender...Lavender There are many varieties of lav- ender that come out of the fi elds to make the ever popular Lavender Es- sential Oil. There are basically three well-known different types of lav- ender essential oil. They all belong to the Family Lamiacea and they all have lavender as part of their name, but that is where the similar- ity ends. The Latin names of the different lavenders is just about the only way to really tell them apart unless you have an expert lavender nose...lol. The Latin name of the True Lav- ender is Lavandula angustifolia or English Lavender as it's sometimes called or L. offi cinalis or L. vera. La- vandin's Latin name is Lavandula x intermedia & Spike Lavender is La- vandula latifolia. The "x" in Lavandin's Latin name indicates this is a hybrid. It was cre- ated in the 1920's by crossing La- vandula angustifolia and Lavandula latifolia, so you could say that La- vandin contains properties of both of those. Without going into too much about the chemical composi- tion of these essen- tial oils, I will explain a bit about their heal- ing properties. True Lavender con- tains the largest amount of "esters" which means it will have the largest degree of bal- ancing, calming, cell regenerating and anti-infl ammatory properties of the three. It also has signifi cant amounts of "alcohols" which bring with them anti-fungal, anti-viral, a strong bactericidal, balancing & im- mune-stimulant properties. Spike Lavender has a signifi cant amount of "oxides" which bring anti-viral, decongestant & immune stimulating properties to the mix. Its "alcohol" content isn't as much as the True Lavender, so while it shares the anti-fungal, anti-viral, strong bactericidal, balancing and immune- stimulant properties, they will not be present in the same degree. Lavandin -- the hybrid-- will have elements of both oils, it has the larg- est amount of alcohols of the three which means its anti-fungal, anti- viral, strong bactericidal, balancing and immune-stimulant properties are likely to be the strongest of the three. It contains "esters" like True Lavender, but not quite the same strength. So I have always bought and used Lavender 40/42, although it is pure Lavender oil, its make-up consists of several types lavender oils! The Lavandula angustifolia, Lavandin hybrid, Spike Lavender and yet another one not as well-known called Lavandula stoechas or Topped Lavender. So it contains all the healing properties of ALL the different lavenders! The thing is this.... the scent and quality of lavender can and does vary from lot to lot, season to season, region to region with so many variables having an impact on the lavender essential oil. Since 40/42 is a combination of those 4 oils...the scent, impact, overall quality and PRICE remain stable! Since there are actually 38 species of lavender, it would be tru- ly diffi cult to continually be able to get the same product consistently for one's customers. 40/42 does everything the other lavenders do... maybe even more since it's a combi- nation of all 4!
