March 4, 2020 www.DesertMessenger.com 13 www.facebook.com/ DesertMessengerNews A walk for Mother Earth By Jackie Deal A tent and two tennis shoes! Jeff, The Janitor, and his Assis- tant Ted came around the corner of the Quartzsite Improvement As- sociation (QIA) building and there, on the front doorstep, was a tent and two shoes! "Hello! The tent!" "Good Morning! I just wanted a safe place to sleep." Out crawled a lovely young lady! She looked 18, well, maybe in her 20s at the most. She's walking across country. She left Delaware on March 10, 2019 and was in Quartzsite on February 18, 2020 on her way to Los Angeles. She was welcomed into the QIA and given coffee and breakfast. What an amazing lady- she's ac- tually 32 and says doing "yoga and spending time upside down helps prevent wrinkles." It must be true! Her motivation is universal and her walk is to raise money for Global Unity Foundation and her own company, "We Are Mother Earth." Her mission is to put greenhous- es, called Spark Pods, in schools. "SpARK PODS" are sort of a smaller size "Biosphere" and will produce food in an "earth friendly sustain- able" manner. If you Google "We Are Mother Earth and Jenny Car- rington" you'll fi nd out much more. Her goals are global in scope and for "the next seven generations." She explains, "SpARK PODS com- bine the production of seafood and vegetables in an integrated applica- tion of solar thermal energy in a self- sustaining pod to be built in school yards across the world. 400 SpARK PODS will be gifted to schools." Jenny herself is trim (walking across country how could she not be?), very attractive and very elo- quent. She says her nickname is "Meatball," because she won a meatball eating contest in college. Her Master's Degree is in Human Development and Social Interven- tion. She promotes "balance and harmony" in the environment and in schools and organizations. Her daily walks are routed by her "navigator," her friend who phones her daily with weather reports and proposed routes. She found Phoe- nix a real challenge; as she felt "most homeless" there. She slept on the side of the road one night and woke up to sprinklers showering her. Her favorite overnight spots are church- es, community centers and parks. Jenny has a small tent and a uku- lele in her back pack. She played me a video of her learning to play the ukulele and we sympathized with each other! We did our best to con- vince her to stay another night in Quartzsite but she said she "had to be in LA by March 10th." Jenny does more than just hike across the country. She meets with "top executives of major corpora- tions and environmental non-prof- its to bring them together." She believes that we don't need to have a "climate crisis, the solutions are already here." She sees sustain- ability and harmony as an "alterna- tive to panic…. a climate climax as a choice." If we had more Jennys and fewer war-mongers this would be a better world. Please consider donating to We Are Mother Earth - an umbrella organiza- tion championing tangible solutions for climate change - to help Jenny Carrington complete her 3000+ mile hike across the U.S. www.gofundme. com/f/wearemotherearth Private End of Street Custom Home, 30' x 40' Workshop with Casita.
