30 | March 2020 F E A T U R E Cape Fear Valley's Neuroscience Team Helps Keep Patients Close to Home BY KIM HASTY J udy Klinck can't say enough good things about Fayetteville neurosurgeon Charles Haworth. Aer all, he's the man who got her back on the tennis courts again. In 2012, Haworth used the cutting-edge Stryker Surgical Navigation System he had helped to develop to perform back surgery on Klinck. e system uses computer technology to help surgeons map out a procedure in an effort to minimize risks. He's also helped develop a scanning technique to produce images that saves time and money and involves less radiation than traditional CT scans. Haworth, a graduate of the Duke University School of Medicine, has been in the area for nearly 25 years, having worked in both Lumberton and Pinehurst before joining Cape Fear Valley. Klinck knew Haworth through St. John's Episcopal Church, where both are members. "I'm always hesitant to use doctors or dentists I know," she said. "But he is so brilliant. I had so much confidence in him. My recovery was so good that I went to physical therapy a couple times and then decided I was already back to doing everything, so I didn't need it anymore." Haworth, Medical Director of Neurosurgery at Cape Fear Valley Medical Center, is working to build the center's neuroscience program so that local patients can get the care they need without having to drive for an hour or more. "Families are so grateful for that," he said. "ink how much harder it would be to have to drive for hours and to find somewhere to stay out of town. at's what we're all about. I like to think people have been very appreciative of getting better care here."
