She was the target of three assassination attempts by men who fired pistols at her. In a fourth attack, a man struck her in the head with a cane. She was widowed at 42 and went through a prolonged period of deep mourning and isolation. During her reign, she sparred with prime ministers, the press and other royals. England's current queen, Elizabeth II, Victoria's great-great- granddaughter, is now the longest- reigning English monarch, having broken Victoria's record on Sept. 9, 2015. We have witnessed her life as a monarch firsthand. We saw her visit bombed-out buildings in London with her parents during World War II; we watched her coronation on television in our homes; and we have seen and continue to see how she comports herself during family difficulties. ere are three things we know for sure about Queen Elizabeth: she always carries a purse (although its contents remain a mystery), she loves corgis and she keeps her opinions to herself. Her ability to keep her composure, no matter what, is a quality we should all admire. I am no longer that 5-year-old who thought being a queen was an easy job. I have some idea of what this job entails, mostly through reading, but also, in the case of Elizabeth II, through direct observation. ere's one thing I know for sure—I never want to be a queen, even if it means I win a refrigerator.
