Info at QuartzsiteFoodBank.com or 928-927-5479 The Quartzsite Museum is OPEN and there is a lot happening! By the time the paper is published our January 23rd speaker, Nata- lie J. Stewart-Smith will have been completed. Again, we hope those who attended enjoyed the presen- tation! We have two speakers re- maining in our program, which is a joint effort with the Friends of the Quartzsite Library and is partially funded by a grant by the Arizona Humanities Council. We hope you will join us for both. Our committee selects topics on areas we hope the community will fi nd interesting and informative and we are very fortu- nate that Arizona Humanities offers these top-notch speakers to us. On February 6 our next speaker, Kevin Schindler will present Theo- dore Roosevelt Slept Here at the Community Center, 295 E. Chan- dler from 7 to 9 pm, in partnership with the Friends of the Quartzsite Library and sponsored by Arizona Humanities. Mr. Schindler is an award-win- ning educator and writer who has worked for more than 20 years at Lowell Observatory in Flagstaff. He was sheriff of the Flagstaff Corral of Westerners for 14 years and a board member of the Flagstaff Festival of Science for 16 years. Combining a dual passion for history and sci- ence, he has presented hundreds of educational programs, authored 6 books, written more than 500 mag- azine and newspaper articles, and contributes a bi-weekly astronomy column for the Arizona Daily Sun. In 2019 Kevin was awarded the Friends of the Humanities Award by Arizona Humanities. Theodore Roosevelt exhibited a greater infl uence on Arizona than perhaps any other president. He was the fi rst sitting president to vis- it Arizona, employed an executive order to preserve the Grand Can- yon, established a variety of wildlife refuges and reclamation projects, and enjoyed outdoor recreation in the area. This program will share Roosevelt's widespread infl uence in Arizona, and also explore some stories of dubious accuracy that in- evitably sprout from such a larger- than-life character. We expect Mr. Schindler's presentation to be both enlightening and entertaining! Please save the date for the fi nal speaker in our series, which will be on February 13. The speaker is Steve Renzi speaking on Barbed Wire, Windmills and Railroads – The Technology that really won the West. More information and the profi le of that presentation will be shared in the Desert Messenger on February 12. Don't forget to enter our motto contest for the Sundial, due by Feb- ruary 29. To refresh your memory, we are asking for motto entries for the sundial located on the property. Come on by the museum to see the sundial, for inspiration! Our fi eld trips are on the 3rd Wednesday of each month, and are free to members and $3 for non- members. Watch for announce- ments of trips and save the dates! Our next one on February 19 will be going to the Yellow Dog Mine, with a tour led by a former owner. We will meet on Kuehn Road past the Love's Truck Stop, in the parking lot before the Super 8 Motel. Meet up time is 10 am. We will publish more infor- mation in the next paper, or you can contact Lynn Stimson at 928-916- 4562 for more information. Our regular meeting of the Quartzsite Historical Society is on the second Wednesday of each month at the Quartzsite Library at 2 pm. The next meeting is Febru- ary 12. We hope you will consider attending and possibly joining our organization! We are no longer collecting cans and bottles for recycling. Check with the Food Bank, the last we heard they were able to process them. Membership of $10 for a year is encouraged. As a member you will receive e-mail notices of coming events, have free admission to our fi eld trips and have a vote in decisions being made regarding the Historical Society and Museum, in addition to helping fund the free Museum. Vol- unteers are always welcome! We are a non-profi t historical so- ciety. Visiting the Museum is free, although donations are always welcome.
