The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is closely monitoring an outbreak of respira- tory illness caused by a novel (new) coronavirus fi rst identifi ed in Wu- han, Hubei Province, China. Chi- nese authorities identifi ed the new coronavirus, which has resulted in thousands of confi rmed cases in China, including cases outside Wuhan City. Additional cases have been identifi ed in a growing num- ber of other international locations, including the United States There is one confi rmed case in Arizona. Coronaviruses are a large family of viruses, some causing respiratory illness in people. Signs and symp- toms, similar to the common cold or the fl u, include a runny nose, cough, sore throat, fever, and general feel- ing of being unwell. According to the CDC, "no vaccine or specifi c treatment for 2019-nCoV infection is available. At present, medical care for patients with 2019- nCoV is supportive." At this time, CDC has issued a Level 3 Travel Advisory: Avoid all nonessential travel to China. How does this virus spread? The new coronavirus is a respira- tory virus which spreads primarily through contact with an infected person through respiratory droplets generated when a person, for exam- ple, coughs or sneezes, or through droplets of saliva or discharge from the nose. It is important that every- Coronavirus update one practice good respiratory hy- giene. For example, sneeze or cough into a fl exed elbow, or use a tissue and discard it immediately into a closed bin. It is also very important for people to wash their hands regu- larly with either alcohol-based hand rub or soap and water. What You Should Not Do Do not travel to China. Do not use facemasks. CDC does not recommend the use of face- masks for the general public to pre- vent the spread of 2019-nCoV. Do not show prejudice to people of Asian descent, because of fear of this new virus. Do not assume that someone of Asian descent is more likely to have 2019-nCoV. At any one time, dozens of infec- tious disease outbreaks are happen- ing around the world.
