When this phrase first surfaced about a year ago, I was excited; it sounded like just what I had been doing in my practice for the last 15 years! Of course, now the politicians and bureaucrats have gotten a hold of it, created an agency to “certify” it, and twisted it to their own needs. In my mind, a medical home is similar to your own home—a place where you are safe, cared for and recognized as an individual. That is what I have always strived to provide for my patients, as a solo family doctor. I believe my job is to provide the right amount of the best care at the correct time and place, according to an individual’s needs based on their beliefs, situation, and medical condition. Sometimes this means admitting someone to the ICU at St. Elizabeth’s, sometimes it means arranging for home hospice. I’m privileged to meet newborns in the Nursery, and perform sports physicals on teens; I coach patients into better lifestyles to manage their diabetes, and provide preventative care to avoid medial problems in the future. I find the best specialist around if I need assistance to take care of your problem. To me, this is what being a medical home is about, not about having computerized medical records or holding group visits ( I think you are entitled to private medical care as well!), but of being recognized when you call my office. People often ask how long I’ve been in Red Bluff, or where I grew up, what my training and credentials are, whether they can trust me with their loved ones. My husband and I moved to Red Bluff in 1993, after I finished my residency in Family Medicine at Northridge Hospital. Before that, I graduated from UCLA School of Medicine and before that, I graduated with Honors from Pitzer College in Claremont, CA. I was an army brat who lived all over the world, and I was looking for a home town. I found that in Red Bluff. While I was initially with Red Bluff Medical Center, I established my solo practice in 1999 after the birth of my second child. I have been affiliated with St. Elizabeth’s since 1993, and currently serve as Chief of Staff. I am board certified in Family Medicine and have an unrestricted California medical license. If you’re looking for a medical home, see if you’re comfortable in mine. Deborah A. Sutcliffe, MD
