Jerry Brown Friday morning appointed Sandra Bruce, 62, of Red Bluff to the Tehama County Board of Supervisors District 2 seat. Bruce, a Republican, has been an account clerk at the Tehama County Department of Social Services since 1984, according to the governor's press release. She's a relatively unknown in local political circles. The Tehama County Republican Party Central Committee's Mike Holtsclaw said he was not aware of Bruce being actively involved with any grassroots Republican parties in the county. She was project coordinator at the Tehama County Health Services Agency in 1999. Bruce 'If she endorses strong Republican values, I see no reason we wouldn't support her' — Mike Holtsclaw, TC Republican Party serves as a union steward for the International Union of Social Services. Bruce will take over the seat previously held by George Russell, who passed away in late September 2012. The board has worked with only four supervisors since then. Operating Engineers at the Tehama County Department of No damage in storm See BRUCE, page 9A Objection filed in Lassen lawsuit By JULIE ZEEB DN Staff Writer Attorneys for the United States filed a motion Wednesday objecting to Magistrate Judge Gregory Hollows' March 20 ruling that Lassen Volcanic National Park destroyed evidence crucial to the case in a lawsuit involving the death of a Red Bluff boy. A lawsuit was filed in June 2011 by Sacramento attorney Steven Campora on behalf of the Tom and Jennifer Botell and family who were involved in a tragic accident on July 29, 2009, while hiking the Lassen Peak Trail. The family had stopped for a picture when a rock retaining wall, weighing between 400-600 pounds, according to court records, gave way resulting in the See LASSEN, page 9A Youth carnival set today in Corning Photo Courtesy of Daniel Hanks A tornado touched down Thursday evening in a field visible from an area on Highway 99W between Sierra Pacific and Walmart Distribution Center. By JULIE ZEEB DN Staff Writer The tornado that touched down south of Red Bluff about 7 p.m. Thursday in an area reported by witnesses as being in a field on Highway 99W between Sierra Pacific and the Walmart Distribution Center barely ranked at the bottom of the National Weather Ser- vice scale. In a statement released by the National Weather Service the tornado was a brief rope tornado with a visible debris cloud that lasted about two minutes, rating a EF0, which has winds of between 65-85 mph. The EF scale runs EF0 65-85 mph EF1 86-110 mph; EF2 11-135 mph; EF3 136-165 mph; EF4 166- 200 mph and EF5 more than 200 mph. The tornado touched down at 6:59 p.m. in an empty field south of Shasta College, about two miles southeast of Red Bluff. The cause of the tornado was a strong thunderstorm that had developed southwest of Red Bluff before See STORM, page 9A The Corning Youth Bowlers will be having a Youth Carnival from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. today at Northside Park, 1414 Colusa St., in Corning. There will be more than 28 fun games and everyone is a winner. A dunk tank with teachers, little league, football, wrestling and basketball coaches along with bowlers from the Java Lanes bowling center. A concessions stand with soft drinks, nachos, barbecued hotdogs and popcorn will be available. Bring the whole family and friends for a fun filled day at the park. For more information call Beverly Martini at 824-3500. 99W road work Coordinating Council seeks nominees to start Monday By RICH GREENE DN Staff Writer Travelers of Highway 99W should expect up to 15 minute delays beginning Monday. Weather permitting, Knife River Construction will begin a roadway rehabilitation project expected to continue through May 10. The construction work is scheduled to be at two locations along old Highway 99W. The first will be north of Corning from Finnell Avenue to Gyle Road and the second in Proberta from 3rd Avenue to Oat Creek Bridge. The project will begin with initial grinding and placement of the recycled material followed by asphalt paving. The project includes placement of new striping, reflectors and rumble strips. Knife River and the Tehama County Public Works Department said motorist should expect delays lasting up to 15 minutes while construction is going on. They advised motorists should plan on using alternative routes when possible in order to minimize traffic in the area. Vehicles will need to be parked off the roadway. On Saturday, May 11, the Council will host their ninth annual Circle of Champions Award Luncheon to recognize and honor members of the Tehama County community who have made a positive impact on the lives of people with developmental disabilities. The public is asked to nominate a Tehama County resident who they feel has been a champion for the Developmentally Disabled.
