"I got a telescope for Christmas when I was 10, and it's been my sole pastime ever since." Horne turned his passion for photography into a profession, graduating from Randolph Community College with an associate degree in photography in 1973. He was hired on staff at the Observer the same year, having worked part-time and as an intern there while he was in college. He continued to foster his love of astronomy aer hours, setting up telescopes and cameras regularly to shoot the night sky. Having seen a friend's personal observatory, and tired of setting up and breaking down his equipment every night, Horne decided it was time to establish a permanent observatory of his own. He and his wife, Ann, had been married about a year and settled in Horne's childhood home when he told her his plan. She said she was "shocked" and a little skeptical. "But he stuck with it, and it's been nice," Ann said. "I always know where he is." Horne, then 25 years old, built the observatory over two years, from the concrete slab all the way up to the dome, which he constructed on the ground with no plan for hoisting the half-sphere on top of the building. "I was 25," Horne said as way of explanation. Horne's setup includes a 14-inch telescope attached to a motor to move the telescope as it tracks objects across the sky. 910.868.5131 | 3200 Cliffdale Road, Fayetteville, NC 28303 | www.fayacademy.org Fayetteville Academy Fayetteville Academy admits qualified students and does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, national or ethnic origin, or religion in the administration of admissions, educational policies, financial aid, athletic programs, or other activities.
