Discove r Cit yV iewN C.co m's fre s h up d ate d loo k ! | 29 For almost five decades, Johnny Horne has been a prolific photographer. e Stedman native spent 44 years as a staff shooter at e Fayetteville Observer and balanced that daily work with astronomy photography, shooting objects hundreds and thousands of lightyears away in space. ose pursuits have sent him and his work far and wide — spreading his photos to various publications and sending the man himself trekking across the globe. But Horne's proudest accomplishment is right in his own backyard. ere, tucked behind his house and standing 19 feet high, is the domed observatory Horne built himself 40 years ago. "Building the observatory is the most rewarding thing I've done in this hobby," Horne said. "I've done more and learned more and been satisfied more here than some two-week trip to the other side of the world." e observatory is a physical representation of Horne's two great passions — photography and space. e first, he came by honestly, developing a love of photography from his father, who was a hobbyist in the art from his teenage years. "When he was a soldier in World War II, he was stationed with some B-29s on the island of Tinian," Horne said. "My grandparents would send him film and paper and chemicals, and he would process the prints in his helmet and mail them back." Horne's love of space came from a wider cultural influence, as he spent his youth following the progress made by NASA's manned spaceflight program.
